LAPD Establishes Task Force to Tackle International Gang-Related Home Burglaries
Los Angeles Battles Visa-Waiver Burglars with a New Task Force
A wave of international thieves entering the United States through the visa waiver program has prompted the LAPD to take decisive action. This elite group, many hailing from Chile and neighboring South American nations, have prompted officials to rally a specialized task force aimed at curbing this criminal onslaught.
Foreign Burglary Rings on LAPD’s Radar
LAPD Chief, Dominic Choi, spotlighted the issue: “We’ve seen a notable rise in burglaries by organized, international groups. They’re picking high-value homes as their prime targets. Our multi-agency task force is on the case, bringing a laser focus to this pressing challenge.”
The city has faced over 900 break-ins since the year kicked off, with a significant number traced back to these tourist burglars, using advanced tech to outsmart security measures.

Police Commissioner William Briggs briefed on the criminal tactics: “These burglars utilize devices to disable Wi-Fi, impeding alarm systems. The best counteraction? Hardwiring alarms systems directly into your home’s ethernet.”
Moreover, Choi emphasized the discovery of jammers and drones across Beverly Hills, extending to other nearby regions, where last year the police caught burglars in military-style camouflage observing potential targets.

Scottsdale’s Police Chief Jeff Walther has acknowledged that Arizona endures a similar plight, stressing the common link of the Chilean burglary syndicates using the visa waiver program to their advantage.
Proactive Measures Beyond LA
Efforts extended as far back as 2022, with the launch of the H.E.I.S.T unit by Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer, purpose-built to prosecute these exact breach incidents.
However, a bump in the road persists; authorities are hampered by the absence of critical background information. “The Chilean government’s refusal to share criminal histories of citizens entering the US complicates the prosecution process,” lamented the Orange County DA’s office. The ESTA system’s integrity is at stake as it’s designed to vet travelers before granting access.
As the City of Angels strives to reinforce its defenses, the formation of this dedicated task force marks a bold step towards safeguarding homes and keeping global criminals at bay.
