Larry O’Connor: The Arrogance of Equity

It was revealed that there are several high schools in Northern Virginia purposely withheld scholastic merit awards From their most highly-achieving students. The details of the story were finally revealed. It was obvious that the emotional abuse of young teens by overly educated school administrators was another example of the left’s latest Holy Grail agenda, equity.

The awards were unceremoniously placed on student desks on November 14, 2022, two weeks after students’ early applications were due for college admissions.  No award ceremonies or press releases citing the scholars’ achievements issued from Bonitatibus’s TJ.  This practice was discontinued years ago by her indeference to the FCPS’s commitment to race-based advancement over academic achievement-based promotion.

You can watch my Salem News Channel interview featuring the brave mom whistle-blower in this case which is gaining national attention:

Some of the most harmful and un-American policies used against our children by state-run schools over the past decade have been justifiable in the guise of equity.

Voters, taxpayers, and suburban soccer moms that aren’t paying attention could be forgiven for willingly supporting the equity agenda. They mistakenly misunderstood the intentions of left-wing social engineering as a quest for equality.

But equity and equality are very different. This is why equity is used by the left. This word is intended to confuse and mislead. This is how socialists can get their agendas in this country.

Americans are conditioned to support ideas such as Medicare For All and the Affordable Care Act, even though they know that they don’t want government-run healthcare. When they market and label a bad idea, the left knows exactly what they are doing. Most Americans find it repelling.

This is the deceptive, destructive category that includes the push to equity in our schools.

Equity as it is used in state-run schools is nothing more than social engineering to achieve the desired outcome for an elite, socialist class at cost of hardworking, innocent kids.

This latest example of equity within public education may seem insignificant and even benign on the surface, but when you examine it closely, you see that refusing to recognize excellence by school administrators is the closest thing our nation has come to a totalitarian regime.

Seventeen-year old children who made the right choices at school, worked hard, partied with their classmates, and focused on academic excellence so they could attend a top college or university. They were deliberately overlooked and ignored when their hard work was recognized as a national merit award.

Fairfax County Public Schools, which is a wealthy suburb of Washington, DC, spends most of its public relation money bragging to other countries about its superior school systems. The school system’s academic success is not due to school administrators who have earned multiple doctorates in education. They were their children, and their parents.

However, the school board, and the school system, are now dominated mainly by left-wing ideologies. They have made it a policy of not acknowledging the children who make them so proud with their test scores, grade point averages, and other grades.

These national merit scholarships aid in college application and grant and scholarship funding to students so they can pay the enormous cost of higher learning. Because it would be unfair to single out any student for academic achievement, the leaders of our most prestigious schools in this country decided not to give these children the recognition that they have worked so hard to get.

It is fundamental and basic. human About wanting to be recognized and rewarded for our hard work.

If our employer underpays us for a hard work day, we resentfully react with indignation.

We will scream in anger if our favorite team loses to a blind umpire of a lazy referee.

If our child is not given the recognition they deserve by a professional educator after years of hard work and sacrifice, we will be upset for them.

These same schools hold endless pep rallies to support their football teams, but ignore those who do well in school and score high on tests. It’s almost as if these left-wing ideologues have different values than us.

Unfathomable arrogance is also evident here.

Imagine how foolish it is to put oneself in this fundamental and essential work/reward cycle. Imagine being able to see the best for another child, and then rejecting this moment of recognition in the name equity.

To believe your values are superior to those of the parents who raised this child to be successful takes real courage. You cannot stand between a child’s years of hardwork and diligent study and their meritorious reward.

The left has shown throughout history an arrogant and all-knowing superiority in what is best for humanity. This latest example demonstrates the arrogance and equity of Stalin’s 5-Year Plan as well as Mao’s Great Leap Forward.

When your local school board attempts equity pedaling, remember that. Equity is not equality. Equity, however, is Marxism.
