New Presidential Candidate Receives Unfavorable Update Upon Joining Race

Former Texas Rep. Will Hurd Faces Hurdles in GOP Primary

Former Texas Rep. Will Hurd has recently joined the crowded field of GOP presidential candidates. However, his chances of making it to the debate stage are uncertain due to the criteria set by the Republican National Committee (RNC).

The RNC announced the requirements for participating in the first debate, which include meeting polling and donor thresholds, as well as signing a loyalty pledge to support the eventual nominee.

Hurd, known for his criticism of former President Donald Trump, made it clear that he will not sign the RNC’s loyalty pledge and will not support Trump if he becomes the nominee. In an interview with CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, Hurd expressed his belief that parties should not manipulate the debate stage and that he refuses to lie to the American people for political gain.

“I won’t be signing any kind of pledges, and I don’t think that parties should be trying to rig who should be on a debate stage,” said Hurd. “Donald Trump is not going to sign that pledge either, and part of it was designed to put him in that place.”

“I am not in the business of lying to the American people in order to get a microphone, and I’m not going to support Donald Trump, and so I can’t honestly say I’m going to sign something even if he may or may not be the nominee,” Hurd added.

When asked about his stance on the RNC’s rules, Hurd simply stated, “the RNC can do whatever the RNC wants to do.”

Hurd emphasized that his only commitments are to the American flag, his wife, and the Constitution. He, along with former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, criticized the RNC’s loyalty pledge. Hutchinson called for amendments due to concerns over Trump’s legal issues, while Christie referred to the requirement as a “useless idea” but expressed willingness to comply in order to participate in the debates.

The RNC defended its loyalty pledge, stating that candidates should respect the decision of Republican primary voters and support the eventual nominee chosen to challenge President Biden.

Neither Hurd nor the RNC has responded to requests for comment from the Daily Caller News Foundation.
