Lawyer: Trump Won’t Take Plea Deal, Won’t Be Handcuffed
Donald Trump’s lawyer has stated that there is “zero chance” that the former president will take a plea deal after being indicted by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, and that his team would file motions to dismiss the case. Trump is not expected to be handcuffed since the indictment has not been unsealed yet.
Joe Tacopina, Trump’s lawyer, said to NBC News on Friday, “President Trump will not take a plea deal on this case. It’s not gonna happen,” he added there is “zero chance” it will happen. “There’s no crime. I don’t know if it’s gonna make it to trial because we have substantial legal challenges.”
Tacopina also noted that Trump is “not going to hole up in Mar-a-Lago.” In another interview with ABC News, Tacopina said that Trump’s reaction to Thursday’s indictment was a shock, adding that “the rule of law died yesterday in this country.”
Jim Trusty, another lawyer representing Trump in a separate case, told CNN that he believes Trump’s legal team will attempt to dismiss the charges before it gets to trial. Several legal experts have made similar remarks, arguing that Trump could try to get the case tossed because of the statute of limitations or because Bragg’s case against him is based on a faulty legal theory.
Despite the unusual circumstances surrounding the case, Tacopina believes that there is really no precedent for this case and that it was done with personal money. Tacopina believes that there is no crime in this case, and there are substantial legal challenges which could prevent the case from ever making it to trial.
The indictment against Trump has not been unsealed, and a court will typically make it public after a defendant appears in court for their arraignment. This case is unprecedented in this country’s history, and it remains to be seen what will happen next.
