Massie tells Biden to back off on new hot water heater standards

Rep. Thomas Massie⁤ Opposes New Energy Efficiency Standards

“Leave us alone,”

Massie wrote‍ on Twitter, expressing his disapproval of a new proposal from the Biden administration.⁤ The proposal, released by the United States Department of ‍Energy, aims ‍to require heat pump technology for electric water heaters and condensing technology‍ for ⁤gas-fired instantaneous water heaters. However, Massie argues that these products already exist in the free market.

“These products⁤ already exist in the free market,” Massie continued. He believes that consumers should have the freedom to decide whether the upfront‍ cost of a heat-pump⁤ water heater is worth the potential⁣ long-term ⁤savings. According to him, in many cases, the monthly savings never compensate for the initial equipment cost.

If approved, the proposed rule would apply to new⁣ water heater models by 2029, resulting in an average savings of $1,868 for consumers over the appliance’s lifespan. Renters and those in low-income households would experience even greater savings.

“This proposal reinforces the trajectory of consumer savings that forms‍ the key pillar of Bidenomics,” stated U.S. Secretary of‌ Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. She emphasized ⁣that the proposal builds on the administration’s efforts to lower energy costs⁤ for working families ‌nationwide.

This proposal comes amidst opposition from Republican lawmakers regarding⁤ President Joe Biden’s energy efficiency proposals. Biden has already issued proposed or ‌final efficiency standards for‌ 18 product categories this year alone.

Last month, the House of Representatives passed ⁢Republican⁤ legislation to limit the federal⁣ government’s ability to regulate natural gas stoves more strictly. Supporters argue that this is necessary to protect‍ consumer choices and prevent government overreach. Many Republicans,‍ as well as centrist Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) and fossil fuel interests, criticized the ‍president’s climate ⁣change agenda implementation, ⁤particularly in regulating residential stoves.
