LeBron James Foundation Director criticizes Akron School Board for ‘intimidating’ school with information.
LeBron James’ I Promise School Faces Criticism Over Math Proficiency
Employees and advocates of LeBron James’ I Promise School expressed their frustration at a recent meeting with the Akron Public Schools board. The board had highlighted the school’s struggle to produce students who can pass math proficiency tests.
The school’s performance has landed it on Ohio’s state watchlist, and it received a low rating of one out of five stars on its most recent report card.
News of the school’s academic challenges made national headlines after being disclosed at a board meeting last month.
During the recent board meeting, eight individuals associated with I Promise voiced their concerns and criticized board members for the negative attention the school has received. They argued that the focus on the school’s performance only serves to further marginalize disadvantaged students.
Victoria McGee, senior director of the LeBron James Family Foundation, likened the discussions about the school’s issues to “bullying” and an attack on the school’s reputation.
A parent, an attorney, and a LeBron James Family Foundation adviser also addressed the board, with a total of about 40 people affiliated with the school attending the meeting.
Board president Derrick Hall defended the board against accusations of unfair treatment towards I Promise. He emphasized that no belittling or bullying comments were made during the board meeting.
LeBron James has not publicly commented on the revelation that no student in I Promise’s current eighth-grade class has passed Ohio’s math proficiency test in three years.
I Promise School was established in 2018 as a collaboration between LeBron James and the local school board. It aims to support at-risk and underserved students in his hometown.
While the school receives significant funding from the LeBron James Family Foundation, the majority of its funding comes from taxpayers.
