LeBron James’ equity-based school: a complete disaster.
Education: From Merit to Equity
In a bygone era, the education system aimed to educate students through a merit-based approach. High achievers were rewarded, while underperforming students faced consequences. However, this approach fell out of favor, deemed too harsh and even racist. The system of merit-based education was dismantled, making way for the concept of “equity.”
But what does “equity” really mean? It’s a question that remains unanswered. However, in practice, it has translated into spending more money on subpar schools and starting new schools from scratch to avoid perpetuating perceived inequalities.
One such school, founded in Akron, Ohio, with the help of NBA All-Star LeBron James, was hailed as a groundbreaking solution. The media celebrated its launch, emphasizing the importance of caring for students rather than focusing on test scores or grades.
However, the media conveniently overlooked one crucial detail: the students’ actual academic performance. A recent report revealed that not a single eighth-grade student at the I Promise School had passed the state math test since starting in the third grade, five years prior. English scores were equally dismal, with only 11% of eighth graders testing proficient in the subject.
Despite the school’s failure to deliver on its promises, the media continued to praise it, ignoring the glaring evidence of its shortcomings. The truth is that no amount of funding or inspirational rhetoric can compensate for broken families and a toxic culture. The students at I Promise School, despite their access to state-of-the-art resources and free lunch, continue to struggle academically.
This failure highlights the need to address the underlying issues plaguing marginalized communities, such as broken families and a lack of moral and intellectual formation. Merely throwing money at the problem without addressing these fundamental issues is a futile endeavor.
Unfortunately, the Left’s approach to problem-solving often lacks coherence. While they advocate for increased funding in education and homelessness, they simultaneously push for defunding the police. This contradictory stance only exacerbates the problems at hand.
Ultimately, the consequences of these misguided policies will be felt by the most vulnerable members of society. The children who are failed by these experiments will be left uneducated, impoverished, and dependent on a government that only pretended to care about their well-being.
While some may call this a disaster, our leaders label it as “equity.”
