LeBron James Seems To Think America Is Worse Than A Russian Cell
LeBron James thinks the U.S. has not done enough for Brittney Griner, who pled guilty last week to charges of drug possession after her arrest in a Russian airport, with the Lakers star saying that if he were in her shoes, he would be reconsidering coming back to America.
“Now, how can she feel like America has her back?” James said in a trailer for HBO’s “The Shop.” “I would be feeling like, ‘Do I even want to go back to America?’”
Griner was arrested in February after officials found vape canisters with cannabis oil in her luggage at a Moscow airport. She pled guilty last week, saying she didn’t intend to pack them but left them in her bag while packing in a hurry. James’ dig at the U.S. comes after Griner received a response last week from President Joe Biden to the letter she sent him over July Fourth voicing fears that she would never leave Russia, according to The Guardian.
A Black Lives Matter supporter and a vocal critic of the Rittenhouse acquittal and police, James doesn’t keep his political views quiet. And though he claimed after pushback on Tuesday that he “wasn’t knocking our beautiful country” with his Griner comments, it’s actually communist China that James never has anything bad to say about.
In 2020, when Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey tweeted in support of pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong, James de-facto defended communist China, criticizing Morey as “not educated on the situation.” The Lakers’ star’s concern with human rights abuses stops short of the people experiencing genocide in the Xinjiang Province. But after all, China is one of the NBA’s biggest foreign markets, and of course, James couldn’t risk blacklisting “Space Jam.”
