Left-wing hackers retaliate against Texas city for transgender laws.
The City of Fort Worth, Texas Targeted by Hackers
The city of Fort Worth, Texas, recently fell victim to a cyber attack believed to be in retaliation against the state’s stance on sex-change treatments.
Hackers Gain Unauthorized Access
City officials have revealed that a group of hackers managed to gain unauthorized access to an internal information system used by workers to manage maintenance activities. The hackers then proceeded to post stolen data from the site on Telegram and Twitter, accompanied by a message criticizing Texas for its policies on transgender treatments.
“We have decided to make a message toward the U.S. Government,” the hackers stated. “Texas happens to be one of the largest states banning gender-affirming care, and for that, we have made Texas a target.”
The attack came shortly after Texas implemented a ban on sex-change treatments for minors. State representative Tom Oliverson (R.), a supporter of the bill, expressed his approval, stating that children in Texas are now protected from potentially harmful medical and surgical treatments for gender dysphoria. Governor Greg Abbott (R.) signed the legislation into law on June 2.
Fort Worth confirmed that the hackers obtained information from the city’s computer systems, but assured that it did not come from the city’s public-facing internet website.
Minimal Impact on Sensitive Information
The city’s chief technology officer stated that the compromised data originated from a website used by workers to manage maintenance activities. There is no evidence of unauthorized access to other systems or any compromise of sensitive information.
Hacker Group Suspected
Fort Worth believes that the hacker group SeigeSec is responsible for the attack. Last year, the group announced a campaign to target pro-life government bodies and organizations with cyber attacks following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
