Letitia James faces criminal referral for alleged mortgage fraud

New York Attorney General Letitia James has been referred to the Justice Department by the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) for alleged mortgage fraud.FHFA Director William Pulte’s letter claims that James falsified records to secure loans for a property in Norfolk, Virginia, which she misrepresented as her principal residence while serving as a prosecutor. The allegations further state that she mischaracterized a five-family home in Brooklyn as having only four units in various mortgage documents, which may have allowed her to obtain a lower mortgage rate and monthly payments. Pulte expressed concerns regarding James’s credibility based on her past property transactions, including one where she allegedly misrepresented relationships in mortgage applications. The referral comes amid ongoing tensions between James and the Trump management, with Trump demanding her resignation due to the fraud allegations. James has previously sued the Trump administration multiple times, leading to claims that she may be misusing her office to target Trump.

The Federal Housing Finance Agency has referred New York Attorney General Letitia James to the Justice Department for alleged mortgage fraud.

FHFA Director William Pulte sent a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche alleging that James “falsified” records to secure home loans for a Norfolk, Virginia, property that she said was her “principal residence” while she was a New York prosecutor.

She also purchased a five-family home in Brooklyn and “consistently misrepresented the same property as only having four units in both building permit applications and numerous mortgage documents and applications,” the letter claimed.

Because she listed the unit as a four-unit dwelling instead of five, she could have reduced her mortgage rate by as much as 1% and had lower monthly payments under the federal Home Assistance Modification Program, Pulte said.

“Ms. James, for both properties listed above, appears to have falsified records in order to meet certain lending requirements and receive favorable loan terms,” he added.

Pulte also reportedly attached several documents detailing how James purchased another property with her father as a co-signer but listed the pair as “husband and wife” in 1983 and 2000.

“While this was a long time ago, it raises serious concerns about the validity of Ms. James representations on mortgage applications,” he wrote.

James has sued the Trump administration several times, and allies of President Donald Trump have accused her of using her position to target him.

Trump himself called on James to resign “immediately” on Monday, citing a report that detailed allegations of real estate fraud.
