Lia Thomas blasts teammates as ‘fake’ feminists over perceived lack of support

In a recent appearance on the Dear Schuyler podcast, transgender swimmer Lia Thomas criticized the University of Pennsylvania’s women’s swim team for having “implicit bias against trans people” and only offering “half-support.” Thomas accused the team of using the guise of feminism to push transphobic beliefs and claimed that people who argue biological men shouldn’t compete in women’s sports are rejecting science.

Former championship swimmer-turned-women’s sports advocate Riley Gaines hit back at Thomas’s comments, accusing the swimmer of trying to “gaslight” women. Gaines emphasized that women are fighting for their right to privacy, safety, and fairness, as well as the essence of Title IX rights.

Half-Support is Not Enough

According to Thomas, the women’s swim team at the University of Pennsylvania only offers “half-support” to transgender athletes. The team claims to respect Thomas’s identity as a trans woman but doesn’t think it’s fair for her to compete. Thomas argues that this kind of half-support is not enough and that the team is using feminism to push transphobic beliefs.

Rejecting Science?

Thomas and Schuyler Bailar, another transgender athlete who hosts the Dear Schuyler podcast, claim that people who argue biological men shouldn’t compete in women’s sports are rejecting science. They compare this argument to past arguments that it wasn’t fair for black women to compete in white women’s sports because they looked different.
