After more than three weeks of brutal attacks, Qatar, in coordination with the United States, successfully brokered an agreement involving Egypt, Israel, and Hamas that permits limited evacuations from the besieged Gaza Strip.
On Wednesday, hundreds of foreign passport holders from a range of countries, including Australia, Austria, Finland, Indonesia, Japan, and Jordan began leaving war-torn Gaza through the Rafah border, which connects Egypt and Gaza.
Some Americans, as well as wounded Palestinians trapped in Gaza, were also cleared to evacuate. Wednesday marked the first time the border had opened since the Hamas attacks on Israel that happened on October 7th.
President Joe Biden announced on X, formerly known as Twitter, that the negotiations that took place to open the border are due to U.S. leadership.
However, the duration for which the border crossing will remain open for evacuations has not been specified.
Late on Wednesday, a total of 335 dual nationals had crossed the border, along with 76 individuals who were seriously wounded or ill. In Washington, U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller confirmed that a number of American citizens have left Gaza, but he did not provide a specific number.
On Wednesday, he stated, “There are a number of American citizens who have crossed through Rafah and are in Egypt today.”
At least five non-governmental organization workers, that were confirmed to be Americans, had been approved to cross on Wednesday, as indicated by Gaza’s Hamas-controlled interior ministry.
However, it remains uncertain how many of the at least 400 American citizens who are currently in Gaza will be able to cross in the coming days.
Wounded individuals were quickly transported by ambulances to Egyptian field hospitals.
Teams of medical professionals were stationed at the Rafah border crossing, according to a medical representative in Arish, Egypt.
They reportedly assessed individuals’ medical conditions and decided on the appropriate hospitals for their treatment.
The same medical source also mentioned the construction of a field hospital spanning 1,300 square meters in the northern Sinai city of Sheikh Zuweid, situated approximately 10 miles (16 kilometers) away from Rafah. This facility is intended to provide care for injured Palestinians.

What countries’ foreign passport holders have started leaving Gaza through the Rafah border, and who else has been cleared for evacuation?
Qatar, in coordination with the United States, has successfully brokered an agreement involving Egypt, Israel, and Hamas, allowing for limited evacuations from the besieged Gaza Strip. After enduring more than three weeks of brutal attacks, this agreement offers a glimmer of hope for the civilians trapped in the war-torn region.
On Wednesday, foreign passport holders from various countries, including Australia, Austria, Finland, Indonesia, Japan, and Jordan, started leaving Gaza through the Rafah border. This border connects Egypt and Gaza and had been closed since the Hamas attacks on Israel that occurred on October 7th. Additionally, some Americans and wounded Palestinians were also cleared to evacuate.
President Joe Biden took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to announce that the negotiations to open the border were due to U.S. leadership. He expressed his gratitude, stating, “Today, thanks to American leadership, we secured safe passage for wounded Palestinians and for foreign nationals to exit Gaza. We expect American citizens to exit today, and we expect to see more depart over the coming days. We won’t let up working to get Americans out of Gaza.”
While the border has been opened for evacuations, the duration of its availability has not been specified. As of late Wednesday, a total of 335 dual nationals and 76 seriously wounded or ill individuals had crossed the border. The U.S. State Department confirmed that a number of American citizens have left Gaza, but a specific number was not provided. However, it remains uncertain how many of the approximately 400 American citizens currently in Gaza will be able to cross in the coming days.
Ambulances quickly transported wounded individuals to Egyptian field hospitals, where teams of medical professionals were stationed at the Rafah border crossing. These professionals assessed the medical conditions of the evacuated individuals and determined the appropriate hospitals for their treatment. In addition, a 1,300 square-meter field hospital is being constructed in the northern Sinai city of Sheikh Zuweid, which is located approximately 10 miles away from Rafah. This facility aims to provide care for injured Palestinians.
While this agreement marks progress in the ongoing conflict, the situation remains fragile. The international community must continue to work towards a lasting peace and ensure the safety and well-being of all those affected by the conflict in Gaza.
