Lisa Marie Presley’s daughter has a baby through surrogacy while facing health challenges.
Riley Keough Welcomes Child Via Surrogacy Amid Battle with Lyme Disease
Riley Keough, daughter of the late Lisa Marie Presley, recently shared the news that she and her husband, Ben Smith-Peterson, welcomed a child through surrogacy. This decision was made due to Riley’s ongoing battle with Lyme disease, which made it difficult for her to carry a child herself.
The 34-year-old actress/model, who is also the granddaughter of Priscilla Presley and the late Elvis Presley, explained that while she could potentially carry children, her body’s autoimmune issues led her to choose surrogacy instead. Vanity Fair reported on her thoughtful decision.
Keough and her husband welcomed their daughter last year, but the public only became aware of her birth when Riley gave an emotional eulogy at her mother’s funeral in January. At that time, the nature of her daughter’s birth was also revealed.

Riley expressed her admiration for the women who choose to be surrogates, describing their act as “very cool, selfless, and incredible” for helping others.
In the same interview, the “Daisy Jones and the Six” actress discussed the meaning behind her daughter’s name, Tupelo. She revealed that it is a tribute to her late grandfather, the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, Elvis Presley. Tupelo is actually the birthplace of Elvis in Mississippi, and Riley wanted to honor him in a way that was not as well-known as a name like Memphis.
However, Riley’s plan was slightly foiled when Baz Luhrmann’s Oscar-nominated movie “Elvis” was released in May 2022, as it mentioned Elvis’s birthplace throughout. Despite this, Riley remains unfazed and accepts the coincidence.
On January 12, Riley’s mother, Lisa Marie, passed away at the age of 54. She was laid to rest at her father’s Graceland mansion in Memphis, Tennessee, next to Riley’s brother, Benjamin Keough, who tragically died by suicide in 2020.
Shortly after, Riley’s grandmother, Priscilla, filed court documents disputing an amendment to Lisa Marie’s will and control of the family’s trust. However, in June, it was reported that Riley and Priscilla had reached a settlement, although the details were not disclosed at the time. A source close to Riley stated that she wanted to avoid any drama with her grandmother and was happy to have resolved the matter.
Now, Riley’s focus is on creating precious memories with her own daughter. Settling the dispute over her mother’s estate has become her top priority.
