Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson has moved into the No. 1 spot on a new and damning list of the nation’s 10 “worst” sanctuary city mayors.
Dragging his city down even further than predecessor Lori Lightfoot, Johnson has promoted policies that have escalated problems with illegal immigration, “resulting in worsening crime, overcrowding and chaos for city residents,” the report from the Immigration Reform Law Institute said.
Chicago moves up from the No. 3 spot in IRLI’s prior list, knocking off New York City and Mayor Eric Adams, who has thrown up his hands in frustration with illegal immigrants moving into his city, where reports of migrant crime have surged, including a reported knifepoint rape on Coney Island.
Also new on the list was the appearance of Washington, D.C., and Mayor Muriel Bowser, who has governed over a surge in crime, shootings, and carjackings in nicer neighborhoods and tourist areas and who won voting rights for illegal immigrants.
“Sanctuary policies are some of the biggest magnets drawing illegal aliens into this country, and sanctuary mayors are the loudest advocates of those policies,” said Dale L. Wilcox, executive director and general counsel of IRLI. “While they claim to be more compassionate than their critics, the policies of these mayors are actually causing unacceptable levels of overcrowding, criminal activity and death in their communities.”
“The job of immigration enforcement personnel is to remove dangerous aliens and keep communities safe,” said Tom Homan, IRLI senior fellow and former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. “Sanctuary mayors and their policies prevent ICE from doing their job, and innocent people are dying as a result. The lawlessness of sanctuary cities and their mayors is destroying some of our greatest cities, and that has to stop.”

The list included two California cities, Los Angeles and Sacramento, embarrassing Vice President Kamala Harris, the former California attorney general who is trying to claim that her immigration policies will be better than her 2024 presidential foe, former President Donald Trump.
