LATEST: House GOP to Nominate Speaker-Designee for Third Time
The House GOP’s Search for a New Speaker Continues
The House GOP is determined to find a new speaker of the House, and they are gearing up for their third attempt on October 24th.
After Rep. Dan Meuser (R-Pa.) dropped out of the running on October 23rd, there are now eight remaining GOP candidates vying for the position. These candidates include House Majority Whip Tom Emmer, Reps. Kevin Hern (R-Okla.), Mike Johnson (R-La.), Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), Jack Bergman (R-Mich.), Austin Scott (R-Ga.), Pete Sessions (R-Texas), and Gary Palmer (R-Alabama).
Last week, Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) failed to secure the gavel after three rounds of voting. The House GOP removed him as their speaker-designee and took a break for the weekend. All candidates had to declare their candidacy by October 22nd.

Prior to Rep. Jordan’s attempt, House Minority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.), the previous speaker nominee, withdrew his bid when it became clear that he wouldn’t have enough votes to secure the position.
The voting for the new speaker will be conducted through a secret ballot. The nominee must obtain 217 votes to succeed Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and become second in line to the presidency. Multiple rounds of voting will take place, eliminating the candidate with the fewest votes each time, until there is only one candidate remaining or if a candidate receives 111 votes, which is more than half of the 221 members of the House GOP conference.

What qualities and skills should the House GOP prioritize in their search for a new Speaker
, 2021. After the unexpected resignation of former Speaker John Boehner in 2015 and the short-lived tenure of his successor, Paul Ryan, the House GOP has been embroiled in a constant search for a leader that can unify their party and effectively lead them in the face of mounting challenges.
The Speaker of the House is one of the most powerful positions in American politics. As the leader of the majority party in the House of Representatives, the Speaker plays a crucial role in setting the legislative agenda, determining which bills come to the floor for a vote, and representing the House in negotiations with the Senate and the President.
Since Boehner’s resignation, the House GOP has struggled to find a leader who can balance the conflicting interests and factions within their party. The speakership has become a much-coveted position, but also one that comes with significant challenges. The Republican Party is deeply divided, with conservative and moderate factions often at odds on key issues such as immigration, healthcare, and taxes.
Paul Ryan, who initially seemed like a unifying figure, was ultimately unable to bridge the gap between these competing factions. His tenure was marked by internal clashes and a feeling of discontent among certain members of the party. As a result, Ryan stepped down in 2019, leaving the House GOP without a clear leader once again.
Since then, the House GOP has made two unsuccessful attempts to find a new Speaker. The first attempt occurred in 2019 but ended in failure as conservative members of the party were unable to rally around a single candidate. The second attempt occurred earlier this year, and while some progress was made, no candidate was able to secure the necessary support to win the speakership.
Now, as the House GOP prepares for its third attempt, the stakes could not be higher. Key legislative battles loom on the horizon, including debates over infrastructure investment, immigration reform, and voting rights. Without a strong and unified leadership, these important issues could be derailed, leaving the House GOP and the American people without the representation and results they deserve.
The House GOP has a difficult task ahead of them. They must find a leader who can navigate the treacherous waters of a divided party while also inspiring confidence and unity among its members. This leader must be able to articulate a clear vision for the future and rally the party around a common set of goals. They must also possess the political acumen and negotiating skills necessary to effectively engage with the Democratic-controlled Senate and the Biden administration.
While the search for a new Speaker has been challenging, it also presents an opportunity for the House GOP to redefine itself and chart a new course for the party. In this time of political uncertainty, the party needs a leader who can bring fresh ideas and a renewed sense of purpose. The House GOP must seize this opportunity and find a Speaker who can lead them into the future with confidence and conviction.
As October 2, 2021, approaches, the House GOP knows that the clock is ticking. The American people are watching, and they deserve a Speaker who can rise to the challenges of the office and deliver the results they need. The House GOP’s search for a new Speaker continues, and the outcome will have far-reaching implications for the party, the House of Representatives, and the nation as a whole.
