Former GOP Representative of Wyoming, Liz Cheney, made a bold claim on Monday. She believes that if former President Donald Trump is reelected in 2024, he will try to extend his time in office beyond four years.
“There’s no question,” Cheney said on NBC’s “TODAY” show with host Savannah Guthrie, regarding her theory that Trump would never step down.
Cheney also discussed the release of her book, “Oath and Honor: A Memoir and a Warning,” which came out on Tuesday.
She strongly believes that if Trump wins the upcoming election, the United States is at risk of becoming a dictatorship.
“I think it’s a very, very real threat and concern. And I don’t say any of that lightly and frankly, it’s painful for me as someone who has spent her whole life in Republican politics, who grew up as a Republican to watch what’s happening to my party and to watch the extent to which Donald Trump himself has basically determined that the only thing that matters is him, his power, and his success,” she said.
According to Cheney, it would be naive to believe that the nation can withstand another Trump administration. She pointed out Republican senators Mike Lee of Utah and Josh Hawley of Missouri as examples and expressed doubt in the ability of Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson (R-La.), to stop Trump.
Cheney also stated that it is “too dangerous to even contemplate going down that path” if Trump were to attempt to manipulate the election with Johnson as House speaker.
She firmly believes that Johnson and the Republican majority in the House should not hold that position in 2025. Cheney believes it would be “safer” for the nation if Democrats took over the chamber.
“I think what we have seen is that you cannot count on this group of elected Republicans to uphold their oath,” Cheney continued.
Cheney declared that she will never vote for Donald Trump and will do whatever it takes to ensure his defeat in 2024.
When asked if she would support Biden in the election, she quickly responded, “I will do whatever it takes.”
“A vote for Donald Trump may mean the last election that you ever get to vote in,” she claimed. “A vote for Donald Trump is a vote against the Constitution.”
The former congresswoman, who is the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, stated that she will wait to decide on launching her own White House campaign until after observing how the presidential contest unfolds in the coming months.
