Liz Cheney still targeting Trump, may run in 2024.

Will Liz Cheney Run for President in 2024?

Former Wyoming representative and prominent Donald Trump critic Liz Cheney wouldn’t say whether she will run for president in 2024 during a public appearance this week.

At a Mackinac Policy Conference in Michigan, Cheney punted on the possibility of a presidential campaign when asked by moderator Devin Scillian and instead pivoted to criticizing the former president.

Cheney’s Focus on Keeping Trump Out of the Oval Office

“I am not making any announcements here today,” Cheney said. “I am really focused on making sure that Donald Trump isn’t anywhere close to the Oval Office again.”

The former congresswoman then reiterated her stance on holding accountable people who promoted false claims of voter fraud during the 2020 presidential election. “And I’m gonna continue to make sure to do everything I can both to ensure that, also to make sure that other election deniers are not elected,” she added. “And I think that is just so hugely important.”

Cheney’s Ousting from Congress

Cheney, then the number three Republican in Congress, was ousted from her position last year by a Trump-endorsed candidate after she voted to impeach Trump during his second impeachment trial. Cheney was booted as chair of the House Republican Conference for repeatedly lambasting Trump’s involvement in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

When asked by Scillian if she regretted the decision, Cheney said she doesn’t. “I don’t have any regrets about the choices I made, except my choice to support Donald Trump. I regret that,” she said. “After it became clear that Donald Trump was willing to go to war with the rule of law. There was no moment where there was another possible honorable choice.”

Cheney’s Continued Attacks on Trump

Cheney’s role as vice chairwoman of the Jan. 6 committee investigating Trump’s role in the riot didn’t do her any favors with the former president or the wider Republican Party. Even after leaving Congress, Cheney has continued her attacks on Trump. Recently, Cheney slammed House GOP members for not combating Trump’s false election claims during a commencement speech at Colorado College.

Earlier this month her super PAC, The Great Task, released an ad urging voters not to vote for Trump. “Donald Trump is a risk America can never take again,” Cheney says as the ad concludes.

Conclusion

While Cheney didn’t confirm whether she will run for president in 2024, it’s clear that her focus is on keeping Trump out of the Oval Office and holding accountable those who promote false claims of voter fraud. Her continued attacks on Trump have made her a controversial figure within the Republican Party, but she remains steadfast in her beliefs.
