Liz Truss walks out of book event after lettuce banner prank: ‘Not funny’ – Washington Examiner

Liz Truss, the former⁤ Prime Minister‍ of the United Kingdom, abruptly left a book ⁢promotional event after a prank orchestrated ⁤by a left-wing activist group. During ‍her onstage⁤ discussion at the Beccles Public Hall,‌ a ‌remote-controlled banner⁢ displaying a head of lettuce with the caption “I crashed the economy” was lowered above her. This‌ gag referenced a ‌previous joke by the *Daily Star*, which had humorously suggested that a head of lettuce might outlast her tenure‌ as Prime Minister—a‍ title she ultimately held for the shortest duration in UK history.

While Truss was discussing her support for Donald Trump, the banner’s appearance caught her off ‌guard, and she expressed her disapproval, stating, “That’s not funny,” before⁤ leaving the ⁤stage. The incident was met with laughter from some audience members, and the activist group Led by Donkeys later claimed responsibility for the prank on social media.

Liz Truss walks out of book event after lettuce banner prank: ‘Not funny’

Liz Truss, former prime minister of the United Kingdom, walked off the stage at a book promotion event after a left-wing activist group pranked her.

A video posted on X showed Truss sitting down in a green dress for a discussion onstage Tuesday night at the Beccles Public Hall in Suffolk.

“I support Trump, and I want him to win. It’s what I was saying a bit about incumbents. I think the average American is not doing well,” she said as a remote-controlled banner lowered from overhead featuring an image of a head of lettuce and the phrase, “I crashed the economy.”

The image was meant to mock Truss because the Daily Star had launched a live stream to see whether a head of iceberg lettuce would last longer in office than the prime minister during her tenure. Truss had called the outlet’s joke “puerile.”

A man, likely an adviser or security for Truss, went onstage and pointed out the banner to her.

The host of the discussion did not tell Truss as the banner was lowered over her head but said he “had no idea” where the banner came from when confronted by a Truss staffer.

Some people in the audience were heard laughing.

“That’s not funny,” Truss said as she looked up at the banner and left the discussion.

The prank was organized by the group Led by Donkeys, who took credit for the incident.

“We just dropped in on Liz Truss’s pro-Trump speaking tour with a remote-controlled lettuce banner. She didn’t find it funny,” the group wrote on X.

Truss responded to the book event prank on social media.

“What happened last night was not funny. Far-left activists disrupted the event, which then had to be stopped for security reasons. This is done to intimidate people and suppress free speech. I won’t stand for it,” she said on X.

“Would we see the same reaction if the activists were far-right?” Truss added.

The former prime minister has been on a tour for her latest book Ten Years to Save the West.
