The Harris campaign enlisted musician Lizzo in Detroit, Michigan, to tout a rallying cry that has since backfired online.

With a little over two weeks left until Election Day, Vice President Kamala Harris was in Detroit Saturday to win over the state’s 15 electoral votes. Michigan elected her opponent, former President Donald Trump, in 2016 and then voted for President Joe Biden in 2020.

“You know, they say if Kamala Harris wins, the whole country will be like Detroit,” Lizzo said to her hometown crowd. “Okay. Proud like Detroit. Resilient like Detroit. We’re talking about the same Detroit that innovated the auto industry and the music industry, so put some respect on Detroit’s name.”

“My theory has been that Democrats know everything is about to collapse and they actually want Trump to win,” one user captioned the clip.

“Does anyone else see a problem with that, or just me?” another user responded to the clip.

“They’re in total self destruction mode,” another user wrote.

“Trump needs this as a campaign ad,” one user commented.

Another user responded to Lizzo’s clip with a clip of a street in Detroit where trash littered the ground, tents were set up on the sidewalks, and there were open fires burning on the side of the road. That user captioned the clip, “I’m not looking forward to that.”

The clip inspired users to share their personal experiences in Detroit. Another musician, David Scott responded to the clip with his own anecdote. Scott is known by his stage name The Kiffness.

“I’m from South Africa, (one of the highest crime rates in the world) & I’ve never been robbed on tour. I was in Detroit last year & our tour van was robbed TWICE in one night,” Scott wrote.

In the now-viral clip, Lizzo’s “be like Detroit” line was referencing Trump, who spoke to the Detroit Economic Club last week. There, he warned the crowd “our whole country will end up being like Detroit.”

Earlier this spring, Lizzo announced she was quitting the music industry after she received backlash for performing at a fundraiser event for Biden while he was still in the race for reelection. She later clarified that she was “tired of putting up with being dragged by everyone in my life and on the internet.”

The event, which also included a performance from musician Ben Platt, raised $25 million at New York City’s Radio Music Hall.
