Singer and songwriter Lizzo is facing another lawsuit, this time from her 2023 tour costume designer, Asha Daniels. The lawsuit alleges that Lizzo allowed a toxic work environment characterized by bullying, harassment, and racial discrimination.
Court documents revealed that Daniels, who designed costumes for Lizzo’s 2023 tour, accused the singer of fostering a hostile work environment and engaging in sexual harassment and racial discrimination. The lawsuit specifically named Lizzo’s wardrobe manager, Amanda Nomura, as the source of bullying and harassment. Allegedly, Nomura forced performers to change clothes in front of men who would objectify them and made derogatory comments about Black women.
Daniels claimed that she was fired immediately after reporting Nomura’s behavior to Lizzo’s team. The lawsuit also highlighted a previous lawsuit filed by Lizzo’s backup dancers, accusing her of sexual harassment and unprofessional conduct.
“Lizzo is the boss, so the buck stops with her. She has created a sexualized and racially charged environment on her tours that her management staff sees as condoning such behavior, and so it continues unchecked,” Daniels’ lawyer, Ronald Zambrano, told Fox News Digital in a statement. “Lizzo certainly knows what’s going on but chooses not to put an end to this disgusting and illegal conduct and participates herself.”
Lizzo’s representative dismissed the lawsuit as an “absurd publicity stunt.”
“As Lizzo receives a Humanitarian Award tonight from the Black Music Action Coalition for the incredible charitable work she has done to lift up all people, an ambulance-chasing lawyer tries to sully this honor by recruiting someone to file a bogus, absurd publicity-stunt lawsuit who, wait for it, never actually met or even spoke with Lizzo,” Stefan Friedman said. “We will pay this as much attention as it deserves. None.”
The lawsuit claimed that Daniels joined Lizzo’s team with the expectation of a respectful and empowering work environment. However, she experienced degradation, forced labor, denial of medical care, and racial and sexual harassment.
Daniels also alleged that she was subjected to an excessive work schedule, including 20-hour daily shifts, and was denied breaks by Nomura. She further claimed that Nomura monitored and controlled team members under her supervision.
Lizzo previously denied the allegations made by her backup dancers and emphasized her commitment to maintaining high standards and a respectful work environment.
