Fullerton College’s home football opener is finally here!
Fullerton College to Host First-Ever On-Campus Football Game
After more than a century of football excellence, Fullerton College is gearing up for a historic event. On September 2nd, the college will host its first-ever home game on campus at the brand-new Sherbeck Field.
It’s hard to believe that Fullerton, a football powerhouse since 1916, has never played a home game on its own turf. But that’s about to change with the season-opening matchup against Santa Barbara City College.
The game, dubbed the Sherbeck Football Classic, is a tribute to the legendary Coach Hal Sherbeck, who led the Hornets to national championships and retired as one of the winningest coaches in community college history.

For decades, Fullerton played its home games at various locations across Orange County. But now, they finally have a place to call their own. Coach Garrett Campbell expressed his excitement, saying, “It’s pretty special knowing that we’ll walk out of the locker room right onto the field.”
The lack of a dedicated football venue was primarily due to the proximity of Fullerton High and other nearby sites. But now, being on campus brings numerous advantages. Athletic Director Scott Giles highlighted the increased engagement, special events, and alumni involvement that will come with having their own field.
Not to mention the logistical benefits of ownership. No longer will they have to rely on rented facilities and deal with the uncertainties that come with it. Mr. Giles emphasized, “It’s nice to have ownership, where you have control.”
Getting approval for the project was a lengthy process, facing opposition from some community members. However, the scaled-down plans and modern technology helped address concerns and ensure a successful outcome.
While the new facility will primarily serve football, it may also be used for soccer, track, and lacrosse. However, high school football games and rock concerts will not be hosted there.
The completion of Sherbeck Field, with its lights, stands, press box, and unique gray artificial turf, marks a storybook moment for Coach Campbell. As a former Fullerton player and son of an assistant coach under Sherbeck, this achievement holds special significance for him.
The stage is set for Fullerton College to make history on their own turf, and the anticipation is palpable. The first-ever on-campus game will be a momentous occasion for the college, the team, and the community.
