Lori Vallow, ‘Doomsday Mom’ Who Allegedly Killed Her Children, Won’t Face Death Penalty
Lori Vallow Daybell, the Idaho mother who is alleged to have killed two of her children, will not be facing the death penalty in her upcoming trial. Lori is accused of killing her 16-year-old daughter Tylee Ryan and 7-year-old Joshua “J.J.” Vallow, and is charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder. The motion to dismiss the death penalty was heard by District Judge Steven Boyce at the Fremont County Courthouse in St. Anthony, Idaho, who granted the dismissal “to ensure the rights of the defendant to a fair trial are protected.”
Chad Daybell, Lori’s final husband, also faces trial for the children’s murders, with prosecutors being asked to hand over all written and recorded statements that Chad made since being taken into custody. Chad still faces the death penalty. The couple had extreme religious views and Lori allegedly referred to those who didn’t share her beliefs as “zombies.” Her beliefs resulted in the deaths of people around her, including her children and ex-husband Charles Vallow.
Tylee was Lori’s daughter from a previous marriage, and Lori adopted J.J. with her former husband Charles. The family moved to Kauai, Hawaii, then moved to the suburbs of Phoenix, Arizona, before Lori met Chad Daybell. Charles filed for divorce from Lori in 2018, stating that she threatened to kill him if he stood in the way of her preparations for the second coming of Jesus Christ, which she and Daybell believed would happen in July 2020. Lori was reported to the police but they seemingly believed that Charles had mental health issues instead of Lori.
In July 2019, Lori’s brother, Alex Cox, called the police in Chandler, Arizona, to report that he had shot and killed Charles, citing self-defense. After Charles’s death, Lori attempted to claim his million-dollar life insurance policy. Lori and Chad moved to Rexburg, Idaho, where they reportedly had religious visions, and Lori’s children went missing.
Police began an investigation in September 2019, and the following year, on June 9, 2020, police searching Daybell’s property found the bodies of Tylee and J.J. The couple was not charged with the murders until May 2021, and Lori was sent to a mental health facility to determine her competency to stand trial. On April 3, 2022, Lori’s trial will commence, followed by Chad’s.
