The Homeless Crisis in Los Angeles: A Growing Problem

The homeless crisis in Los Angeles is reaching alarming levels, with the number of homeless individuals increasing by 10% according to the 2023 Greater Los Angeles Homeless Count results. This data, released on Thursday, also revealed a 9% rise in homelessness in Los Angeles County.

Los Angeles County now has a staggering homeless population of about 75,518 people, up from 69,144 in 2022. The city of Los Angeles itself saw a significant jump, with the number of homeless people reaching approximately 46,260, comparable to the student body of the University of California, Los Angeles.

While the increase in numbers is slightly less dramatic than in previous years, the homeless population continues to grow steadily, indicating an ongoing crisis on the streets of Los Angeles.

“We Have a Crisis on Our Streets, and It’s Getting Worse”

Dr. Va Lecia Adams Kellum, the CEO of the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, expressed her concern, stating that the homeless count results confirm what is already known – the situation is dire and worsening.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the city, county, and homeless services authority are now taking immediate action to provide housing for those in need.

Disappointing Results and the Need for Solutions

Janice Hahn, Chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, expressed her disappointment in the results, emphasizing the importance of finding solutions. She acknowledged the efforts of cities that have supported initiatives to combat homelessness but stressed that more cities need to step up.

Los Angeles is not the only major city experiencing a surge in homelessness. Chicago saw a 57% increase, Portland saw a 20% increase, and various areas in California, such as San Diego, San Bernardino, Riverside, and Kern, also witnessed a rise in homelessness.

The 2023 Los Angeles homeless count was conducted from January 24 to 26, with efforts made to improve accuracy by utilizing a new counting app and hiring experts in demography and data science.

Last year, the accuracy of the 2022 homeless count was challenged by Los Angeles officials, particularly due to the absence of homeless individuals in the Venice Beach area, known for its significant homeless population. This year’s count aims to rectify any irregularities and provide a more accurate representation of the crisis.

Mayor Karen Bass has made progress in housing homeless individuals, with at least 14,000 people transitioning from the streets to interim or permanent housing. However, the 2023 homeless count highlights the need for further action to address the city’s homeless population.
