LA forms task force to tackle smash and grab robberies.
Los Angeles Launches Task Force to Combat Retail Theft
Los Angeles is taking action to address the surge in retail theft, particularly organized smash-and-grab robberies involving large groups of thieves. The city has announced the formation of the Organized Retail Crimes Task Force, a collaborative effort between Mayor Karen Bass, the LAPD, and other law enforcement agencies.
Recent incidents have highlighted the urgency of this issue. Just last weekend, a mob of nearly 50 individuals wearing hoodies and masks targeted a Nordstrom store in Los Angeles, making off with up to $100,000 worth of luxury merchandise. The thieves even resorted to attacking security guards with bear mace.
Another high-profile incident occurred when a group of 30 to 40 thieves brazenly robbed a Yves Saint Laurent store in broad daylight, escaping with an estimated $300,000 worth of merchandise. Surveillance footage captured the chaotic scene as the thieves rushed into the store, their arms laden with expensive items.
The task force aims to crack down on these crimes and bring the perpetrators to justice. The first suspect in the Yves Saint Laurent robbery has already been arrested and charged with various offenses, including organized retail theft and burglary.
Addressing the Impact of Retail Theft
Mayor Karen Bass emphasized the gravity of these crimes, stating, “These are not victimless crimes – especially in the case where Angelenos were attacked – through force or fear – as they did their jobs or ran errands.” She expressed the task force’s commitment to aggressively investigating these incidents and holding the culprits fully accountable.
LAPD Assistant Chief Dominic Choi highlighted the broader impact of retail theft on the community, stating that it not only affects businesses financially but also undermines the overall well-being of the city. He called for collective efforts to create a safe environment where streets and businesses are protected from the scourge of theft.
A Growing Problem
Los Angeles has been grappling with a significant increase in retail and personal theft in recent months. While most types of violent crime have decreased, theft has risen by 15%, with over 20,409 reported incidents compared to the previous year, according to police data.
Furthermore, Los Angeles County has witnessed at least 170 organized retail thefts, including the smash-and-grab trend, since the fall of 2021, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office. This alarming trend is not limited to Los Angeles alone, as organized retail theft has seen a national rise of approximately 27% in 2021, according to the National Retail Federation.
The task force’s formation comes amid criticism that lenient consequences from progressive prosecutors in California have emboldened thieves. This issue extends beyond Los Angeles, with cities like New York, Houston, Miami, Chicago, Seattle, Atlanta, and Dallas also experiencing significant retail crime.
With the launch of the Organized Retail Crimes Task Force, Los Angeles aims to tackle this pressing issue head-on, ensuring the safety of its streets, businesses, and residents.
