Los Angeles school district reaches deal with education union, ending three-day strike

The Los Angeles United School Board has tentatively reached a deal with a union to increase the salary of almost 30,000 workers.

According to a speech made public by the school board on Friday, the agreement between the table and the Service Employees International Union Local 99, which represents vehicle drivers and other school personnel, will expand healthcare benefits for part-time employees, spend significant resources in the workforce’s professional development, and improve pay for the employees.

Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho expressed his gratitude to SEIU Local 99’s returning for returning to the table to discuss a deal that meets the needs of our staff and returns students to their classrooms. ” We already appreciate Mayor Bass’s leadership and support in making the negotiations go more smoothly. We pledged to accomplish three objectives when we first began negotiating with SEIU. We wanted to correct well-known, decades-long injustices that affected the lowest-wage earners and to respect and enhance the respect of our workforce. As a result of the agreement, the Los Angeles Unified minimum wage increases to$ 22.52, surpassing both California‘s and the city of San Francisco. Additionally, current employees who participated in the district’s 2020 – 21 academic year will receive a$ 1,000 bonus as compensation for their in-person work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Healthcare benefits for workers who put in at least four hours a day are also included in this agreement, along with salary increases of 6 % retroactive to July 1, 2022, 7 % ongoing wage increases effective July 1st, 2023, and$ 2 per hour increases for all employees as of January 1. 2024.

In a number of comments posted on social media, the coalition has praised the contract.

The agreement was reached following three days of coalition protests from March 21 through March 23. Social media users went viral with images of the protesters holding tents and performing choreographed dance in the street.

Karen Bass, the mayor of Los Angeles, intervened on Wednesday afternoon to assist the coalition and the school district in making a choice. Bass asserted that she did not intend to make the fire about herself or to obstruct the procedure.
