At least 125 schools have admitted Barnes, and letters continue to come in the mail. This scholarship haul is believed to have set a new record, beating the previous holder’s sum total of $8.7 million in 2019.

  • Member of the National Honor Society

Barnes, who is slated to graduate on May 24, wants to earn $10 million in scholarship awards by the end of April and will announce his college plans on May 2.

Once he makes his decision, he intends to study criminal justice and computer science. “I know that he has big ambitions,” his mother said. “Big goals, and I believe with everything in me that he’s going to achieve all of it.”

Guinness World Record

Officials at Barnes’s school are collaborating with Guinness to confirm the new record.
