Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist launches gubernatorial bid in Michigan

Lieutenant Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II announced Tuesday that he is running to become Michigan‘s first black governor.

The campaigns for Michigan’s future political leader come after the November election where the state elected the Republican candidate Donald Trump. Gilchrist pledged in an X post to “solve problems and deliver results” while also accusing Trump of “breaking commitments to our state and attacking Michiganders every day” in a campaign ad.

“Now, we face new challenges. We need bold leadership to protect our rights & build health & wealth for every Michigander,” Gilchrist wrote.

As Whitmer’s term limit approaches, Gilchrist has launched his campaign into an already crowded Democratic primary. The competition includes Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan initially campaigned as a Democrat but is now running as an independent.

Gilchrist has been Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s (D-MI) lieutenant since her first term in 2018. Whitmer took him under her wing after he lost a 2017 race for Detroit City Clerk. The governor has already committed to not endorse any candidate in this race but appeared in Gilchrist’s campaign ad.

There are already opponents to Gilchrist’s campaign. The Michigan Freedom Fund issued a statement pointing to Gilchrist’s deleted tweets from 2009 that were critical of Israel and his $1.9 million apartment among other things. According to the group, he was late to pay property taxes on a Detroit apartment building in 2018 and never conceded his 2017 loss.

“Lieutenant Governor Gilchrist has an unfortunate history of dodging tough questions, but he can only ignore what’s on the mind of Michigan voters for so long,” MFF Advocacy Director Zach Rudat said. “Gilchrist has taken troubling stances, questionable actions, and committed derelictions of duty in his role as LG. If Gilchrist wants to stand tall for Michigan, he can start with the truth about his record.”

At the moment, Gilchrist is Michigan’s highest-ranking black elected official.
