Automakers unite to create EV charging network to challenge Tesla.

Major Automakers Collaborate to Build Electric Vehicle Charging Network

Seven major automakers, including General Motors, ‌BMW, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis, have ‍joined forces ⁣to ‌create a new electric vehicle charging network in the United‌ States‍ and ⁢Canada. Their aim is to compete with Tesla‌ and make zero-emission vehicles more appealing⁤ to customers.

The partnership plans to install ‍over 30,000 high-powered charging plugs in urban areas and ⁣along highways, addressing concerns‌ about long-distance travel. Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius expressed support ⁤for ⁢the initiative, stating, “Charging is⁢ an ⁤inseparable part of the EV-experience, and this network will be another step to⁣ make it as convenient as ‍possible.”

Expanding the Charging Infrastructure

The automakers will begin by establishing a network of reliable high-powered charging stations‍ across ⁤North America, ⁤with the first stations set ‍to open in the summer of 2024. This move aims to nearly double ⁣the current number of EV ⁢charging plugs, which stands at around 36,000 according to the⁢ U.S. Department of Energy.

While this⁢ joint ⁢venture ⁢competes with‍ Tesla’s ‍charging efforts, drivers will have access to both Tesla’s North American Charging Standard plugs and the Combined Charging System ⁤plugs used by other automakers.

Support from the Biden Administration

The announcement‌ aligns with the⁣ Biden administration’s goal of ⁢transitioning half of ‌American consumers to⁣ electric⁢ vehicles by ‍2030. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg praised‌ the collaboration, stating, “This is a win for American consumers and another big step‍ toward our electric future.”

Furthermore, the new charging ⁢stations will meet the standards required by the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure ⁤program and the Made In America requirements.

Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm highlighted the collective effort behind the initiative, stating, “We are seeing tremendous ⁤momentum as private companies, cities, states, and utilities join forces behind our shared goal of ⁤convenient, reliable charging that reaches every pocket of America. This is what an all-of-America ⁣effort looks like.”
