A Left-Wing Charity Finds New Fundraising Solution After Credit Card Donation Suspension
A left-wing charity that recently faced challenges in accepting credit card donations has found a new solution to continue its fundraising efforts. The Alliance for Global Justice, an Arizona nonprofit group, and the entities it supports were unable to process credit card transactions following reports on its ties to Palestinian terrorism. However, records now show that the Irish-American financial services company Stripe has stepped in to process cards on behalf of the alliance.
This development has raised concerns among legal experts and Congress, as the alliance’s alleged funding of known terror groups goes against terms of service, IRS rules, and federal laws. Marc Greendorfer, an attorney heading the Zachor Legal Institute, a think tank fighting antisemitism, has stated that both the alliance and any payment processors aware of its “terror fundraising” could be held civilly liable for aiding and abetting foreign terror groups.
Concerns Over Support for Groups Terrorizing the Jewish State
The alliance has been accused of fundraising for Collectif Palestine Vaincra, a member of the Samidoun Palestinian Prisoner Solidarity Network, which is an Israeli-designated terror coalition sponsored by the alliance. These ties have prompted calls from organizations like Zachor and the National Legal and Policy Center for the federal government to investigate the alliance’s possible support for groups terrorizing the Jewish state.
The Alliance for Global Justice, which reported over $10.6 million in its most recent fiscal year, was previously unable to accept credit card donations due to actions taken by Salsa Labs contractor CardConnect. This situation significantly impacted the alliance’s ability to fundraise and support sponsor organizations that rely on these funds for their operations.
In response to the fundraising challenges, the alliance published a press release criticizing the Washington Examiner for its coverage, calling it an ”attack on AFGJ.”
Stripe’s Controversial Decision
Stripe’s decision to work with the Alliance for Global Justice has drawn criticism, particularly from those concerned about the alliance’s alleged ties to Palestinian terror organizations. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers has called for transparency from Stripe regarding its choice to do business with the alliance, emphasizing the need to condemn threats of violence against Israel.
Stripe, which processed $817 billion in transactions in 2022, states in its terms and conditions that it does not work with entities engaged in unlawful violence or discrimination based on various characteristics. However, its decision to work with the alliance has raised questions about its commitment to these principles.
Notably, other payment processors like PayPal, Plaid, and Discover have previously blocked Samidoun from using their services due to similar concerns. The French group Collectif Palestine Vaincra, which is associated with the alliance, coordinated with the Popular Front in 2021 to fundraise for a child ”indoctrination” in the Gaza Strip.
Influential Donors and Anti-Israel Ties
The Alliance for Global Justice has received significant donations from influential liberal nonprofit groups, including the Tides Center and Tides Foundation, which collectively contributed over $7.9 million in 2020. Planned Parenthood and George Soros’s Open Society Foundations network have also provided financial support to the alliance.
In addition to its alleged ties to Palestinian terrorism, the alliance has appeared to sponsor the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions against Israel coalition. However, it faced difficulties in fundraising after Salsa Labs ceased its partnership with the charity. The BDS movement is now accepting credit card donations through the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel.
Furthermore, the alliance has sponsored the Lajee Center, a group located in the Palestinian refugee camp Aida. The center’s director has shared videos on social media depicting clashes between Palestinian civilians and the Israeli military.
Overall, the alliance’s ability to resume credit card transactions through Stripe has sparked concerns among lawmakers and experts, who believe it enables the organization to continue its controversial activities. The Alliance for Global Justice has not responded to requests for comment.
