Majority believes US in constitutional crisis: Poll
A recent YouGov poll reveals that a majority of Americans, about 54%, believe that the United States is experiencing a “constitutional crisis,” largely due to actions taken by President Donald Trump, such as significant changes across the executive branch and clashes with various federal departments. Despite this perception, Trump maintains a reasonably high approval rating, with 53% of respondents affirming that he is fulfilling his campaign promises. Additionally, many support his management’s goals, notably regarding immigration policies. However, some of his actions, especially those related to transgender individuals in the military, have met with controversy. The poll highlights a division in public sentiment about the power of the executive branch and its relationship with judicial oversight, with some political figures calling for significant accountability measures against judges who challenge executive decisions. The poll surveyed 1,106 respondents.
Majority believes US in constitutional crisis despite high Trump approval: Polls
A recent YouGov poll shows that a majority of the public believes the United States is in a “constitutional crisis,” though recent polling by the same firm also suggests that President Donald Trump has high approval ratings.
The poll found that 54% of respondents believe the U.S. is suffering a crisis in relation to the Constitution after President Donald Trump enacted broad changes across the executive branch, including clashing with the Treasury Department and ordering the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to shut down. Twenty-seven percent of the public disagreed with the sentiment that the U.S. is in a constitutional crisis, while 19% had no opinion on the subject.
The poll was administered to 1,106 respondents.
This also comes in the wake of YouGov finding that 70% of the public says that Trump is “doing what he promised” on the campaign trail and that a majority approves of his job performance, with 53% approval to 47% disapproval.
The majority of the public supports the Trump administration’s goals, such as increasing actions on the border to curb immigration and restricting the reach of the executive branch. Public sentiment against immigration has not been this strong since the 1990s, according to Gallup, and a majority of the public told the polling group that the government “is trying to do too many things that should be left to individuals and businesses.”
However, some moves are not as popular, such as the White House’s focus on transgender men and women in the military, according to Ipsos.
Trump’s administration has worried skeptics with its sweeping executive orders and moves by the Department of Government Efficiency to audit several departments that fall under the power of the executive branch. The administration has also clashed with the judicial system, with some officials suggesting the judiciary should not have power over the executive.
“If a judge tried to tell a general how to conduct a military operation, it would be illegal,” Vice President JD Vance said on X. “If a judge tried to dictate to the attorney general how to exercise her discretion as a prosecutor, that would be illegal as well.”
Billionaire Elon Musk called for judges blocking his department’s actions to be impeached, saying that “a corrupt judge protects corruption. He must be impeached NOW!”
