Most Americans say: Stop using U.S. taxpayer money for Ukraine.
Most Americans Want Lawmakers to Stop Funding Ukraine’s War with Russia
According to a recent survey commissioned by CNN, the majority of Americans are calling for an end to the allocation of their hard-earned tax money towards Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Russia.
The poll, conducted by pollster company SSRS, revealed that 55% of respondents believe that the U.S. Congress should not authorize additional funding to support Ukraine, while 45% are in favor of continuing such funding. Additionally, 51% of participants feel that the U.S. has already done enough to assist Ukraine, while 48% believe that more should be done.
This marks a significant shift in public opinion since February 2022, when Russia initiated its invasion of Ukraine. At that time, 62% of Americans expressed the belief that the U.S. should have been more involved.
Concerns Over National Security
Looking beyond the immediate implications for Ukraine, a majority of Americans are now expressing concerns about the impact of Russia’s war on U.S. national security. However, these concerns have diminished compared to February 2022, when 72% of respondents were worried about threats to U.S. security.
While there is some bipartisan agreement on the issue, with more Democrats than Republicans supporting continued funding for Ukraine’s war, the majority of respondents from all parties share concerns about the war persisting without resolution. Approximately 80% of participants, including 82% of Democrats, 75% of independents, and 73% of Republicans, express this worry.
Furthermore, around two-thirds of participants are apprehensive about the potential consequences of the conflict in Ukraine. They fear that it could lead to increased threats to democracy elsewhere (65%) or prompt Russian attacks in other regions (64%). Additionally, approximately 60% are concerned that the conflict may escalate into a broader war in Europe.
Partisan Divide
Despite some areas of agreement, there is a clear partisan divide on the issue. Republicans overwhelmingly argue against authorizing new funding (71%) and believe that the U.S. has already done enough to aid Ukraine (59%). In contrast, the majority of Democrats support additional funding (62%) and assert that the U.S. should do more.
Independents generally hold the belief that the U.S. has sufficiently assisted Ukraine (56%) and express opposition to further funding (55%).
Specific Forms of Assistance
When it comes to specific forms of assistance, there is agreement across party lines that the U.S. should provide intelligence-gathering support to Ukraine. Majorities of Democrats (70%), independents (63%), and Republicans (56%) support this measure. However, support for military training varies, with nearly two-thirds of Democrats in favor (64%), compared to about half of independents and Republicans (48% each).
A significant partisan divide is observed regarding the provision of weapons to Ukraine. While 61% of Democrats are in favor, only 39% of independents and 30% of Republicans support this measure. As for deploying U.S. military forces to participate in combat operations, less than 20% of individuals from all parties endorse the idea.
The CNN poll, conducted by SSRS from July 1 to 31, surveyed a random national sample of 1,279 adults. The participants were initially contacted via mail and the surveys were conducted either online or via telephone with live interviewers. The poll has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.7 percentage points for the full sample, with a larger margin for subgroups.
