Poll finds most Americans believe Biden received preferential treatment in classified documents investigation
Over Half of Voters Believe Biden Received Special Treatment in Document Probe, Poll Finds
A recent survey conducted by Reuters/Ipsos has revealed that 53% of Americans polled believe that President Joe Biden received special treatment during the investigation into his handling of classified documents by special counsel Robert Hur. This majority even included 29% of Democrats who agreed with the statement. The four-day-long poll concluded on Monday and the results were released on Tuesday morning.
Last Thursday, Hur released his report on Biden’s handling of classified documents, stating that there is evidence that the President willfully retained and disclosed classified materials after his vice presidency when he was a private citizen. However, Hur also concluded that no criminal charges are warranted in this matter. The special counsel further argued that due to Biden’s mental state, it would be unlikely for a jury to convict the 81-year-old President of a serious felony, describing him as a sympathetic, well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.
Of those surveyed by Reuters/Ipsos, 46% said they were at least somewhat familiar with Hur’s less-than-flattering description of Biden. The poll also revealed concerning findings for Biden’s re-election campaign, as 78% of respondents, including 71% of Democrats, believe that the President is too old to remain in government. In comparison, only 53% of respondents said that 77-year-old Donald Trump is too old to be elected to office.
Trump, who is currently facing his own classified documents case, criticized the special counsel’s decision to clear Biden, calling it “selective persecution.” He argued that if Biden is not going to be charged, then he should not be charged either, claiming that this is nothing more than selective persecution of his political opponent.
Trump himself has been hit with 40 charges over his handling of classified documents after leaving office, including obstructing government officials from retrieving the documents. In August 2022, the FBI raided Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate to confiscate the classified documents. However, Trump maintains his innocence, citing protection under the Presidential Records Act.
Biden addressed the special counsel’s report in a press conference, stating that the investigation’s conclusion means the classified documents scandal is now behind him. During the press conference, the President became defensive when reporters asked him about the report’s revelations regarding his memory. Biden responded by asserting that he is the most qualified person in the United States to be President.

What are the concerns raised by critics about the special treatment Biden received and its impact on the credibility of the justice system
Den, while 33% said they were not familiar at all. The poll also asked respondents how they felt about the outcome of the investigation. The majority, 57%, said they were dissatisfied with the conclusion that no criminal charges were warranted. Only 25% said they were satisfied with the outcome, while 18% remained undecided.
The findings of this poll highlight a growing concern among American voters regarding the issue of special treatment for politicians. It raises questions about whether politicians, particularly those in positions of power like the President, are held to the same standards as ordinary citizens when it comes to handling classified information.
This sentiment is echoed by the fact that nearly the same percentage of Democrats, 29%, agreed with the statement that Biden received special treatment. It suggests that this issue transcends party lines and is a matter of principle and fairness.
Critics argue that the special treatment Biden received undermines the credibility of the justice system and sends a message that politicians are above the law. They argue that if an ordinary citizen had been found to have willfully retained and disclosed classified materials, they would face serious legal consequences. The perception that politicians can get away with such actions without facing repercussions erodes trust in the justice system.
Supporters of Biden argue that his age and mental state should be taken into consideration when evaluating his actions. They contend that it is unfair to hold an elderly individual, who may have memory issues, to the same standards as someone younger and in better cognitive health. They argue that the intention behind Biden’s actions was not malicious, but rather a result of unintentional mistakes.
Regardless of where one stands on this issue, it is evident that a significant portion of American voters are concerned about the fairness and impartiality of the investigation into Biden’s handling of classified documents. The fact that a majority believes he received special treatment underscores the need for transparency and accountability in dealing with such cases, particularly when it involves high-ranking officials.
Moving forward, it is crucial for the justice system to address these concerns and reassure the public that no one is above the law. It is essential to demonstrate that investigations into politicians’ actions are conducted objectively, without bias or favoritism. This will help restore trust in the justice system and ensure that politicians are held accountable for their actions, just like any other citizen.
