Majority of Greenlanders favor Trump’s plan to join US: Poll

A new poll out of Greenland found its residents agree with President-elect Donald Trump’s suggestion that the country join the United States.

Trump is the latest U.S. leader to attempt to bring Greenland and its population of over 50,000 people among its territories. Greenland’s location is a concern for Russian naval activity. The Greenland-Iceland-United Kingdom gap could prove to be an obstacle for any possible offenses.

Over 57% of respondents in the survey from Patriot Polling were in favor of becoming a state. Another 37.4% were against it, with the remaining 5% undecided. Patriot Polling surveyed over 400 Greenlanders in its first international poll.

The abundant minerals found in Greenland are used in the production of electric vehicles, wind turbines, and military equipment. In 2023, the most recent year the data was collected, mineral production in the U.S. alone made $105 billion.

While Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said Greenland is not for sale, Donald Trump Jr. visited Greenland but did not declare it a diplomatic mission on his father’s behalf. While there, the president-elect’s son promised a “symbiotic” relationship with all free nations.
