Majority of Americans Believe Trump Committed a Crime, But It Hasn’t Affected His GOP Nomination Bid
Recent polling has revealed that a significant number of United States citizens believe former President Donald Trump has committed a crime. However, this belief has not hindered his bid to become the Republican nominee, as less than one-third of Republicans agree with this sentiment.
Strong Belief in Trump’s Criminal Activity
According to a report by Navigator Research, more than three in five voters, including 67% of independents, believe that Trump has committed a crime in one of his four indictments. Among Democrats, a staggering 92% share this belief. However, only 28% of Republicans believe the same.
“Because of the low number of conservative voters who believe the former president committed a crime, Trump remains the strong front-runner for the GOP nomination.”
Due to the relatively low number of conservative voters who believe that Trump has committed a crime, he continues to be the leading contender for the GOP nomination. Trump currently holds a commanding lead over his strongest challenger, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), with 55.1% of Republican voters supporting him compared to DeSantis’ 14.5%, according to the RealClearPolitics average. The other candidates trail far behind in single-digit percentages.
Multiple Criminal Cases and Serious Charges
Trump is currently facing charges in four criminal cases, two of which are federal cases brought by special counsel Jack Smith. These cases span across four different states and cities, with charges filed in Georgia, Florida, New York, and Washington, D.C. The most serious charges are federal offenses related to his alleged attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election and mishandling of classified documents.
Approximately seven in 10 voters consider the charges brought against Trump to be serious cases. Navigator research indicates that 60% of voters believe the investigations are legitimate. While the level of trust is similar across each case, the New York case involving alleged hush money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels has the lowest level of trustworthiness, with 64% of respondents believing it to be a serious case.
Divided Opinions on Conviction
When it comes to the belief that Trump will be convicted of the alleged crimes, the results are nearly evenly split. 42% of respondents believe he will be convicted, while 41% believe he will not.
Trump has consistently maintained his innocence in all the cases and has likened the investigations to a political “witch hunt.”
The survey was conducted between Aug. 17-21, just days before Trump turned himself into authorities in Fulton County, Georgia, and became the first former president in history to have his mug shot taken.
