Make-A-Wish Is Only Granting Wishes To Kids Who Get COVID Vaccine
The Make-A-Wish Foundation is only granting wishes to families whose children get the COVID-19 vaccine.
In a June 9 video announcement, Make-A-Wish President and CEO Richard Davis announced that the charity will “resume granting air travel wishes within the United States and its territories, as well as granting wishes involving large gatherings for vaccinated wish families as soon as September 15, 2021.”
“All wish participants — including your wish kid and any siblings — will need to be two weeks past completion of either a one-dose or a two-dose vaccine,” said Davis. “Although we won’t ask for proof of vaccination, we’ll ask for any adult participant to sign a letter of understanding that certifies that they — and any minors participating in the wish — are vaccinated and understand the risks of traveling at this time.”
“We understand that this change affects many families whose children aren’t eligible for the vaccine yet, and also know that there are families who aren’t ready to get the vaccine. We will respect everyone’s freedom of choice,” he continued, adding that cruise and international travel wishes “will not resume for a significant period of time.”
On YouTube, Davis’ announcement received twenty-three times more dislikes than likes.
Policymakers are grappling with the legality of mandating COVID-19 vaccines.
On June 24, Rep. Warren Davidson (R-OH) proposed the Vaccine Passport Prevention Act, which would “bar the federal government from issuing any form of vaccine passport; ban states from doing the same as a condition of receiving federal funds; and bar businesses connected to interstate commerce from requiring ‘any patron or customer to provide any documentation certifying COVID-19 vaccination, or post-transmission recovery, as a condition’ of service.”
“They’re not really providing a rational basis for discriminatory activity — they’re busy separating healthy people from other healthy people on the presumption that people without a vaccine are not healthy,” said Davidson in an interview with Fox News. “It’s a violation of civil liberties.”
Meanwhile, members of the Biden administration — including Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg — are encouraging businesses to mandate the vaccine.
“If a company, a business wants to take steps to keep their workers and their passengers safe, I would think that, from a government perspective, we want to do everything we can to encourage that,” he remarked. “And that’s certainly our view at the federal level.”
Charity Navigator gives Make-A-Wish two stars out of five, primarily due to its financial management.
