Making ‘A More Perfect Union’

America is now more divided politically and culturally than any time in its history, with the exception being the Civil War. The conflict between the two main political parties is seemingly constant. People judge one another based on the color of their skin and not their character. Billionaires build homes of stadium size, while the homeless live in our cities. Teachers and parents disagree about who should educate their children. God is not allowed in the public square, and is only welcome in churches on Sundays. Red America honors the red and white while blue America has become the land where woke is celebrated.

However, history tells us not be discouraged. Almost two-and-a-half centuries ago, 39 delegates from 12 states assembled in Philadelphia wrought a miracle — the United States Constitution, which begins:

We the People of the United States do ordain this Constitution for America in order to forge a better union and insure Justice, domestic Tranquility and provide for the common defense.

Is there anyone who has ever set a higher goal in life? The founders of the Republic had every right to be proud of their achievements, having defeated the most powerful nation on the planet and won independence despite the odds.

Americans have survived a bloody Civil War to date, two world wars, the Cold War, several recessions large and small as well as Vietnam and Afghanistan. Presidents were murdered or impeached and many other dangerous events. There are many reasons America is resilient, not least because of its abundance of natural resources. However, America has always had outstanding leaders, from Abraham Lincoln and George Washington to Martin Luther King Jr. and America is now the most free, just and prosperous nation in history. This is not a figment of our imagination, but a fact.

However, this inspiring, remarkable story is not being told at our universities and schools, where our failings and successes are exaggerated and our virtues ignored. How do we create? “a more perfect union” If there is no value in forming, Citizens are the answer. “historians” — WE THE PEOPLE — who must recount the truth about America, still the land of the free and the home of the brave.

These are some inspiring examples

This is the message and challenge “Toward a More Perfect Union: The Moral and Cultural Case for Teaching the Great American Story,” A powerful new book by Timothy Goeglein. He is a veteran of D.C. politics, and the Washington vice-president of Focus on the Family. He challenges every one of us to educate our children — and our grandchildren — about America, the bold and the beautiful. He offers many examples of the American spirit to help us. These include:

President U.S. Grant, who led the North to victory.
