Man ditches new EV on family vacation, switches to gas-powered car to complete trip.
A Family’s Road Trip Takes an Unexpected Turn: Abandoning Their New EV
A man and his family embarked on an exciting road trip in their brand new $115,000 electric vehicle. However, their journey took an unexpected turn when they encountered charging issues along the way.
Dalbir Bala and his family were traveling from La Selle, Manitoba, to Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, in their 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Lariat. They had carefully planned their route to include charging stations to accommodate the vehicle’s 320-mile range limit.
Unfortunately, their charging plans fell through. When they arrived at a charging station in Albertville, Minnesota, Bala encountered a faulty connection message. Despite reaching out for assistance, no one responded to his call. Undeterred, he drove to another charging station in Elk River, Minnesota, but faced the same issue.
With only nine miles of battery remaining, Bala made the difficult decision to leave his electric truck behind and have it towed to a nearby Ford dealership. To continue their trip, the family rented a gas-powered Toyota 4Runner.
Challenges and Frustrations
Bala had initially been impressed by the new technology and the promise of electric vehicles. However, the charging infrastructure’s unreliability and lack of support left him frustrated and disillusioned.
Robbin Nesbit, sales manager for the Wright-Hennepin Cooperative Electric Association, confirmed that other drivers were able to charge their cars successfully on the same day. This further highlighted the specific issues Bala faced.
Improving Access to Charging
Ford Motor Co. did not immediately respond to a request for comment. However, Megan Joakim with Ford of Canada stated that the company is actively working to improve access to charging for their customers.
Despite setbacks like this, the demand for electric vehicles continues to grow. The Biden administration has implemented legislation, such as the Inflation Reduction Act, to incentivize the adoption of EVs through tax credits and support for battery production.
While the transition to electric vehicles offers many benefits, it is crucial to address and improve charging infrastructure to ensure a smooth and reliable experience for EV owners.
Would You Ever Buy an EV?
Oh, but it saves the planet!

Despite the challenges faced by Bala and his family, the popularity of electric vehicles continues to rise. Ford has adjusted its production targets to meet the growing demand, aiming to produce 600,000 EVs per year by the end of 2024.
While incidents like this highlight the need for improvements in charging infrastructure, it is important to remember that the transition to electric vehicles is an ongoing process. As technology advances and infrastructure expands, the benefits of EVs will become more accessible to all.
