Oregon man accused of imprisoning woman in cell now faces charges of rape and kidnapping in unrelated case.
Man Accused of Kidnapping and Rape Faces Fresh Charges
A shocking case has emerged involving a man who allegedly abducted a woman in Seattle, drove her to his home in Oregon, and imprisoned her in a makeshift cinder block cell. Now, court documents reveal that the suspect, Negasi Zuberi, is facing additional charges of kidnapping and rape in a separate case that occurred two months earlier.
The indictment, filed in Klamath County, Oregon, states that on or around May 6, Zuberi kidnapped an unidentified victim, referred to as Jane Doe, with the intention of sexually assaulting her. The indictment further alleges that he used or threatened to use weapons, including a handgun and a stun gun, to harm the victim.
Zuberi has been indicted on multiple counts, including first-degree rape, sexual abuse, and kidnapping. The indictment was filed in September with the Klamath County Circuit Court.
No defense attorney is listed for Zuberi in the state court system, according to online records. It remains unclear whether the defense attorney assigned to his other case in federal court is also representing him in this new case.
Zuberi is already facing charges related to interstate kidnapping and transporting an individual across state lines with the intent to engage in criminal sexual activity. These charges stem from the incident that led to his arrest in July. Zuberi has pleaded not guilty to these charges.
Prosecutors in the federal case allege that on July 15, Zuberi solicited a woman for prostitution in Seattle’s Aurora Avenue, a known area for sex work. After falsely claiming to be an undercover officer, he showed her a badge, threatened her with a stun gun, and restrained her with handcuffs and leg irons before taking her to his home in Klamath Falls.
The courageous woman managed to escape by breaking the welded joints of the cell door, creating a small opening through which she climbed out. Authorities discovered handwritten notes detailing plans for an underground dungeon located 100 feet below ground level.
Zuberi fled the scene but was apprehended by state police in Reno, Nevada, on July 16, thanks to the woman’s quick actions. The FBI is now investigating potential additional victims, as they believe Zuberi may be connected to other violent sexual assaults in different states.
The federal case is scheduled to go to trial later this year.
