Illegal immigrant connected to deadly NY stabbing: County Executive

Illegal Immigrant Suspect Arrested in Connection to Deadly Stabbing

A suspect who was ⁤arrested over the ⁢weekend‌ in connection to the ⁣deadly stabbing of a man in ⁣New York is an illegal immigrant who was arrested earlier this year after allegedly stabbing another man at a convenience‌ store in Maryland, according to a county executive.

The Troy Police Department said in a statement on Sept. 4 ⁤that officers located and arrested Carlos Corrales-Ramirez, 20, at about⁣ 4 p.m. on Sept. 3 in the area ⁣of River⁣ Street and Bond Street in Troy—a city ‍located in Rensselaer County, which is on the eastern bank of the Hudson⁤ River.

Mr. Corrales-Ramirez appeared for his arraignment at Troy City Court on Sept. 4 and he will be held ‍at the Rensselaer County Jail without bail, according to the statement.

So far, few details have been provided ‌in ‍connection to the stabbing‍ other than that the victim was Jario J.‌ Hernandez-Sanchez, 28, of Rensselaer County. Authorities have not offered a motive for the stabbing and indicated that‌ the investigation is still ongoing.

Police said‍ the ⁣suspect’s prosecution will be handled by the Rensselaer County District Attorney’s Office.

Rensselaer County Executive Steven F. McLaughlin said on X, formerly Twitter, that the suspect of the slaying is a ‌Honduran national who “was apparently not only in ⁣the country illegally,”‍ but he was also released after being ⁢implicated in another stabbing that took place in Maryland in February.

“How he got here and how he was freed after the arrest this past winter and out on the streets to allegedly murder someone in Troy needs to be‌ explained,” Mr. McLaughlin ‍said.

According to the Daily Voice, citing the Laurel Police Department, a ⁣man with the same name and⁣ age as Mr. Corrales-Ramirez allegedly ⁣stabbed a 23-year-old man in broad ⁢daylight at a 7-Eleven in Laurel, Maryland. The victim⁤ was ⁣taken to a hospital in critical, but stable condition.

Assistant Police Chief Steven Barker told news outlets that Mr. Corrales-Ramirez is the same individual as the suspect ⁤who was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol agents in Maryland.

“I can ‌confirm our defendant is⁢ the same individual that was arrested earlier this year,” Mr. Barker⁢ said. ⁢”The arrest does ⁣not signify the conclusion of⁢ our⁢ investigation. Detectives will continue their follow-up ⁢investigation as they attempt⁤ to learn more about the⁣ circumstances surrounding the incident.”

In March, ‌Swanton Sector Chief Patrol ‍Agent Robert Garcia said in ⁤a post on X ⁣that the suspect ⁣”will ‍be extradited for criminal proceedings,” but the Washington Times ⁤reported that court records ‌show Mr. Corrales-Ramirez still ⁤has an active warrant.

Blame Game

Mr. McLaughlin blamed the deadly stabbing incident on lax border policies that have led to an influx of illegal immigrants⁣ in‌ the United States in recent years.

He said that the “inability” of President Joe Biden and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul—who recently labeled the state’s illegal immigrant crisis a⁢ national issue and asked President Biden to take responsibility for resolving it—is “a clear example” of how lax border policies are⁤ “failing New‌ Yorkers and ‌Rensselaer County residents.”

“This arrest is clear proof the‌ open borders and sanctuary cities policies are failures, and the inability by Biden and Hochul⁤ to deal with the illegal‌ migrant issue are placing our safety and⁣ quality of life in jeopardy,” Mr. McLaughlin said.

“It is becoming all too clear that there‍ are two sets of laws and standards in our nation and our state,” he added. “The end result of that foolishness and lack ‍of common sense ⁣is a killing⁤ on Saturday in the biggest city in our county allegedly by a man who was not supposed to be in our country and additionally, not ⁣free on the streets.”

The Biden administration was not immediately available to comment on the matter, ⁤but White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre recently‍ defended the president’s border strategy, ⁢stating that his ⁢plan is to slow⁣ down the flow ‌of unlawful migration.

Ms. Jean-Pierre said the president has been addressing the ⁣border crisis on his own without getting help from ‌Republicans in Congress. She also accused GOP lawmakers of refusing to provide the necessary funding‍ to address the “broken” immigration ‌system.

“What they choose to do is play politics,” Ms. Jean-Pierre said.

New⁢ York’s Immigration Crisis

This weekend’s stabbing incident comes about two weeks after Ms. Hochul sent a letter to President Biden begging for federal aid as Republican leaders in border states continue to send illegal immigrants to Democrat-run cities, citing overwhelming conditions in border regions due to migrants crossing the U.S.–Mexico border illegally.

“With the arrival of over 100,000 asylum seekers and migrants ‍in the past year, coupled with the sustained arrival of hundreds if not thousands to the City every week, ⁤the federal government must partner with the City and State in handling this humanitarian crisis,”‌ Ms. Hochul wrote in the letter.
