Man dies while in custody after scaling Long Beach elementary school fence.
Man Dies After Confrontation at Long Beach Elementary School
In a dramatic incident at a Long Beach elementary school on September 19, a man carrying a sledgehammer attempted to climb a fence but was met with resistance from several brave bystanders. Sadly, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Long Beach Police Department received a call about a home invasion in the 6700 block of Orizaba Avenue. When officers arrived, they were redirected to McKinley Elementary School, where the suspect had climbed a fence and entered the parking lot.
As the suspect tried to enter the school campus, a group of courageous men pulled him down and detained him until the police arrived. The officers handcuffed the suspect, but tragically, he became unresponsive shortly after the arrest. The Long Beach Fire Department paramedics were called to the scene, but they could only pronounce the suspect dead.
The cause of death will be determined by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. Since the suspect died while in custody, the incident is being investigated as an in-custody death by homicide detectives. It’s important to note that no excessive force was used during the arrest, according to the police.
How did bystanders react to the suspect’s threatening behavior?
