Man finds 700 Civil War coins in Kentucky.

Astonishing Discovery of Rare Civil War-Era Coins

Prepare to be amazed by the recent discovery made by a man on his Kentucky farm. While tending to his land, he stumbled upon a massive cache of rare Civil War-era coins, the majority of them being gold. This incredible find, known as the “Great Kentucky Hoard,” has the potential to be worth millions of dollars.

The unidentified man who unearthed this treasure recorded himself as he carefully sifted through the dirt, revealing the different types of gold coins he had found. The exact location of this extraordinary discovery remains a secret, adding an air of mystery to the story.

In a video capturing the moment, the man exclaimed, “This is the most insane thing ever! These are all $1 gold coins, $20 gold coins, $10 gold coins, and look, I’m still diggin’ them out.” It’s truly a sight to behold.

The rare coins date back to the years between 1840 and 1863, including the highly sought-after eighteen 1863-P $20 Gold Liberty coins. According to GovMint, a coin dealer, these coins often fetch six figures due to their rarity. Additionally, hundreds of American gold dollars from 1850 to 1862 were discovered, along with some silver coins.

The Significance of the Discovery

Rare coin dealer Jeff Garrett emphasized the importance of this find, stating, “The stunning number of over 700 gold dollars represents a virtual time capsule of Civil War-era coinage, including coins from the elusive Dahlonega Mint.” It’s truly a remarkable piece of history.

The story behind the hoard adds another layer of intrigue. It is often reported that wealthy Kentuckians buried their wealth to protect it from bootleggers and outlaws. Georgia Southern University archaeologist Ryan McNutt suggests that this particular hoard may have been buried in advance of Confederate John Hunt Morgan’s raid in June to July 1863, given the time period and the location in neutral Kentucky.

Kentucky played a unique role during the Civil War. Despite divided loyalties among its citizens, the state officially declared neutrality, making it one of four slave states that did not secede from the Union. However, it became a target for raids, and Morgan’s raid in 1863 caused significant damage to both military and civilian property.

According to McNutt, the fact that the coins discovered in the hoard were federal currency suggests that they were hidden to evade Confederate raiding parties. During this time, many Americans became skilled at concealing their goods and valuables.
