Portland Man Convicted of Triple Homicide in Shocking Case
A jury in Portland, Oregon, delivered a verdict on Friday, finding Brett Pruett guilty of first-degree murder, unlawful use of a weapon, burglary, and assault. The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office announced the conviction in a news release.
The chilling incident occurred on July 17, 2020, when police discovered the lifeless bodies of three individuals at a residence in northeast Portland. According to The Oregonian/OregonLive, Pruett mercilessly killed Tashia Cobb and her fiancé Elmer Hughes outside the house, before proceeding to murder their friend Lawrence Murphy inside.
However, justice prevailed as the police apprehended Pruett the following day.
During the trial, Senior Deputy District Attorney Nathan Vasquez revealed that Pruett resided in a neighboring house owned by Betty Boyles, who he had been caring for. However, after Boyles passed away in April, Pruett attempted to claim ownership of her property and demanded rent from Cobb, Hughes, and Murphy.
Despite facing an eviction lawsuit, Pruett persisted in demanding rent payments. The prosecutor informed the jury that Pruett, fueled by days without sleep during a methamphetamine binge, resorted to fatally shooting Hughes, Cobb, and Murphy.
The defense team sought to discredit witnesses and argued that the police hastily singled out Pruett as the suspect. Additionally, they requested a mistrial, alleging that the prosecution had withheld crucial information that could have impacted their defense strategy.
Pruett is set to be sentenced in January, marking the next chapter in this harrowing case.
