Costa Mesa Man Sentenced to Prison for Fatal DUI Collision
A tragic incident in Huntington Beach has resulted in a 28-year-old Costa Mesa man being sentenced to four years in prison. Christopher Ellis Johnstone pleaded guilty to several charges, including gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence of a drug causing injury. The victim suffered great bodily injury and unfortunately did not survive the collision.
The incident occurred on Memorial Day in 2021, just before 6 p.m. Johnstone was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe on Beach Boulevard when his vehicle collided with a 1975 Honda motorcycle. The collision took place north of Liberty Drive, according to the police report.

The victim, identified as 26-year-old Chanel Garcia from Newport Beach, was critically injured and rushed to a nearby hospital. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries and passed away.
According to the investigation, Johnstone was following behind the motorcycle on Beach Boulevard. As the motorcycle slowed down for a traffic signal, the Tahoe rear-ended it, resulting in the fatal collision.
