Costa Mesa Man Sentenced to Prison for Fatal DUI Collision

A tragic incident in‌ Huntington Beach has resulted in a 28-year-old Costa Mesa man being sentenced to four years in prison. Christopher Ellis Johnstone pleaded guilty to several charges, including gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving ‌under the influence of a drug causing ​injury. The victim suffered great bodily injury ⁤and unfortunately did not survive the collision.

The incident occurred on Memorial Day ⁢in 2021, ‌just before 6 p.m. Johnstone was driving a 2008 ⁣Chevrolet Tahoe⁣ on Beach Boulevard ‌when his vehicle collided with a 1975 Honda motorcycle. The collision took place north of Liberty Drive, according to ‌the police report.

The victim, identified as 26-year-old Chanel Garcia from Newport Beach, was critically injured and rushed to a nearby hospital. Tragically,​ she succumbed to her injuries and passed ⁣away.

According to the investigation, Johnstone was following behind the ‍motorcycle on Beach ‌Boulevard. As the ​motorcycle slowed down for a traffic ⁤signal, the Tahoe rear-ended it, resulting in the fatal collision.
