Manchin urges Biden to address border crisis, calls it our top challenge
Sen. Joe Manchin Urges President Biden to Take Action on Border Crisis
In a compelling interview with Margaret Brennan on CBS News’ “Face The Nation,” Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) emphasized the urgent need for President Joe Biden to address the escalating crisis at the U.S. southern border. Manchin stressed that this issue is the most critical challenge currently facing the nation, especially with the 2024 elections on the horizon.
“I think the border has to be fixed… We were told before Christmas, we’re going to stay here and get this done. Then, all of a sudden, OK, you can go home now, because we’re getting some language done now, but we’re writing, putting pen to it. We’re going to come back, and, as soon as we come back – that was last week – we’ll have something.”
Manchin expressed his frustration with the lack of progress, stating that the situation at the border is becoming increasingly dangerous. He firmly believes that if Congress fails to act due to partisan disagreements, President Biden must take decisive executive action and declare a national emergency. Manchin emphasized the need to halt any further paroles at the border until a comprehensive solution is implemented.
“The president has to step forward and declare an emergency… I don’t believe there should be any more paroles at the border until we can get a handle on what’s going on. And it is – it’s just extremely bad right now.”
Manchin’s concern for the severity of the crisis is so profound that he urged President Biden to shut down and secure the border if Congress fails to pass necessary legislation this week.
“If Congress cannot pass something this week, Biden needs to declare a national emergency at the border and do what needs to be done to shut that border down and secure it until we can get a handle.”

How does Sen. Manchin propose addressing the root causes of migration and improving border security in a bipartisan manner?
S not a political issue, but a humanitarian one that requires immediate action.
During the interview, Manchin pointed out the overwhelming number of migrants attempting to cross the border, stating that it was a clear indication of a crisis that cannot be ignored. He acknowledged the difficult task that lies ahead but reiterated the importance of finding a solution that protects both national security and human lives.
The Senator from West Virginia recognized that comprehensive immigration reform is a complex issue that spans beyond the borders of the country. He emphasized the need for a bipartisan approach, urging both sides of the aisle to come together and find common ground. Manchin believes that finding a solution requires a multi-pronged approach that includes addressing root causes of migration, improving border security, and creating a fair and efficient system for legal immigration.
Manchin also commended President Biden’s recent decision to deploy Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) resources to assist in managing the situation at the border. However, he urged the administration to go further and take decisive action to address the root causes of migration. He stressed the importance of working with Central American countries to tackle issues such as poverty, violence, and corruption, which are driving people to leave their homes and seek refuge in the United States.
Furthermore, Manchin stressed the need for immediate action to provide resources and support to the overwhelmed border agencies. He highlighted the strain on Border Patrol agents who are responsible for not only enforcing immigration laws but also providing humanitarian assistance to migrants in need. He called for additional funding and resources to ensure that these agencies have the capacity to handle the influx of migrants in a humane and efficient manner.
In his closing remarks, Manchin reiterated that the border crisis is not a partisan issue but a crisis that requires immediate attention and action from both sides. He emphasized the importance of finding common ground and working together to address the root causes of migration, strengthen border security, and create a fair and efficient system for legal immigration.
Sen. Joe Manchin’s plea to President Biden to take action on the border crisis reflects the growing concerns from both Democrats and Republicans about the situation at the U.S. southern border. As the situation continues to escalate, it is crucial that all parties set aside political differences and work together to find a solution that upholds both national security and human rights.
