Manchin explains why he won’t run for president, remains hesitant to support Biden
Sen. Joe Manchin Explains Why He’s Not Running for President
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) recently revealed his decision to not seek a third-party bid for the White House this year. In an interview with CNN, he cited the Senate’s failure to pass a border and foreign aid bill as the “biggest” reason behind his choice.
Manchin expressed his disappointment in the lack of bipartisan cooperation on the border deal, especially considering the ongoing crisis at the border. He placed blame on former President Donald Trump for causing a sudden change in the negotiations.
“I always believed that we could legislate through a crisis. We’d come together for a crisis. Well, guess what, we have a crisis. The border is a crisis,” Manchin stated. “I saw my friends walk away when they were determined to pass border security, and they were on board three days before that. And with Donald Trump coming as hard as he came at them, they cowered down and walked away. I said, ‘We’re not fixing anything in Washington.'”
Despite his decision not to run for president, Manchin commended Sen. James Lankford (R-OK) for his efforts on the border deal, calling him the “most decent, honorable person and conservative in the entire Senate.”
The proposed legislation aimed to make changes to the asylum process, grant the president expulsion authority, and increase the number of Border Patrol agents and asylum officers, among other provisions.
While Manchin has ruled out endorsing a specific candidate at this time, he expressed openness to considering other third-party or independent options if the main party tickets in November consist of Trump and President Joe Biden.
“I’m not endorsing anybody right now. We’re gonna see what all happens. We’ve still got plenty of time here. I’m gonna do everything I can to help move them back to the middle and show them where the strength of this country lies, where the voting bloc of the country lies,” Manchin explained. “Right now, there might be other people getting in, there’re still independents, you might have still a third-party run from No Labels, and we’ll just see what opportunities and what type of options you have.”
No Labels, a party considering a bipartisan presidential ticket, is currently evaluating other candidates and will make a decision on whether to launch their bid on Super Tuesday. They have gained ballot access in 16 states and aim to appear on all 50.

Why does Manchin believe that the Democratic Party needs to appeal to a diverse range of views?
Itical cause and put aside our partisan differences. But unfortunately, this time, we couldn’t do that,” Manchin said.
Manchin emphasized the importance of finding common ground and working across party lines to address pressing issues facing the nation. He highlighted the need for bipartisanship in order to effectively address the border crisis and provide the necessary resources to secure the border and process the influx of migrants.
“We can’t afford to play politics with border security. It requires a comprehensive approach that transcends party lines and focuses on finding solutions,” Manchin explained.
Not only did the failure to pass the border and foreign aid bill impact Manchin’s decision on a presidential run, but he also expressed concern over the state of the Democratic Party and its focus on progressive policies that may not resonate with all Americans.
“I believe that the Democratic Party needs to be a big-tent party and ‡represent a diverse range of views. We can’t be narrow-focused on one ideology, we need to appeal to all Americans,” he emphasized.
Manchin acknowledged the need to address important national issues such as climate change and income inequality but stressed the importance of taking a pragmatic approach and finding solutions that are feasible and realistic.
While Manchin‡ may not be running for president in 2024, he remains committed to serving the people of West Virginia as a senator. He plans to continue his work in the Senate and advocate for bipartisan cooperation to tackle the country’s most pressing challenges.
Despite his decision, Manchin’s reputation as a moderate Democrat with a willingness to work across the aisle has earned him support from both sides of the political spectrum. Many see him as a voice of reason amidst the partisan divide, and his decision not to run for president may disappoint those hoping for a candidate who prioritizes finding common ground.
As speculation swirls about potential candidates for the 2024 presidential race, Manchin’s decision serves as a reminder of the challenges and pressures faced by those who choose to pursue the highest office in the land. It highlights the importance of considering personal convictions, the state of the party, and the pressing issues facing the nation before making the decision to run for president.
“I am honored to serve as a senator for the great people of West Virginia, and I will continue to fight for bipartisanship, compromise, and common sense solutions in Congress,” Manchin concluded.
As the 2024 presidential race draws nearer, it remains to be seen who will emerge as the nominee for both the Democratic and Republican parties. However, Sen. Joe Manchin’s decision not to run for president demonstrates the careful considerations and challenges involved in such a pursuit, while also shedding light on the importance of bipartisanship and pragmatic solutions in addressing the nation’s most pressing issues.
