Philippine senator and former boxing champion Manny Pacquiao officially filed paperwork to run for president. On Friday, the newly retired boxing star filed with the country’s election commission for the May 2022 general elections. He was joined by his running mate, Lito Atienza.
Pacquiao is seeking to succeed the country’s current president, Rodrigo Duterte. This comes after the eight division world champion announced his retirement from boxing on Wednesday after more than two decades in the ring.
The Philippines has reported almost 3 million in total COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic, with about 38,000 deaths. Pacquiao stressed his priority is resolving the pandemic and driving the economy to recovery.
I boldly accept the challenge of running as PRESIDENT of the Philippines. We need progress. We need to win against poverty. We need government to serve our people with integrity, compassion and transparency. The time is now. I am ready to rise to the challenge of leadership. 🇵🇭 pic.twitter.com/suN1zFTxyW
