Marine wounded in Kabul airport bombing says ‘no one was held accountable for our safety’

They handed out small cards to the crowd periodically, and the older man sat calmly and seemingly coached the bomber. Over the communication network, we passed that there was a potential threat and an attack imminent. This was as serious as it could get.”
Vargas-Andrews claimed that Vargas-Andrews was in Vargas’ sights and ready to shoot, while Vargas said his battalion commander denied that he knew if the bomber could be taken out. The man vanished.
“Eventually, the individual disappeared. To this day, we believe he was a suicide bomber. We made everyone on the ground aware. Operations had briefly halted but then started again. Plain and simple, we were ignored,” He concluded. “Our expertise was disregarded. No one was held accountable for our safety.”
Vargas and Andrews were later with Marine Corps Staff Sgt. Darin T.Hoover was the one he described, calling him a “keeper.” “friend and mentor,” I went looking for an Afghan interpreter among the crowd and was waiting for his family’s arrival when the bomb went off.
