Mark Hamill Uses ‘Star Wars’ Voice To Warn Ukrainians About Air-Raid On App
Actor Mark Hamill has lent his voice as a Jedi from “Star Wars” to a new air-raid app being used in Ukraine to warn residents of an incoming aerial bombardment from Russia.
The 71-year-old actor—best known for his role as Luke Skywalker in George Lucas’ hit franchise—urges people to seek shelter in his familiar voice as a Jedi knight, the Associated Press reported.
“Attention. Air raid alert,” Hamill tells people when the downloadable app linked to Ukraine’s air defense system goes off. “Proceed to the nearest shelter.”
“Don’t be careless,” Hamill’s voice advises. “Your overconfidence is your weakness.”
And when it is safe for residents to come out from their shelter, the famed “Star Wars” star announces in his Jedi voice “the air alert is over. May the Force be with you.”
Once air raid sirens start howling, the “Air Alert” app not only tells Ukrainians to seek cover but that Russian missiles, bombs and deadly exploding drones may be incoming, the report noted.
The use of a Hollywood star — from movies about the universe being involved in a fictional war — being used in a real war between Russia and Ukraine is almost surreal. However, Hamill said he’s admired the resilience of Ukraine … “under such terrible circumstances” and he is glad to help in any way he can.
“A fairy tale about good versus evil is resonant with what’s going on in Ukraine,” Hamill said. “The Ukrainian people rallying to the cause and responding so heroically … It’s impossible not to be inspired by how they’ve weathered this storm.”
“Here I sit in the comfort of my own home when in Ukraine there are power outages and food shortages and people are really suffering,” he added. “It motivates me to do as much as I can.”
A 38-year-old business manager in the capital, Kyiv, Olena Yeremina, said hearing Hamill’s “May the Force be with you” first made her laugh, and now that humor has given her strength.
“It’s a very cool phrase for this situation,” Yeremina added. “I wouldn’t say that I feel like a Ukrainian Jedi, but sometimes this phrase reminds me to straighten my shoulders and keep working.”
