North Carolina Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson was hospitalized after a campaign event on Friday to be treated for burns, according to his campaign.
Robinson was treated for second-degree burns on his hand that occurred during a campaign event in Mt. Airy, according to News Nation. He has since been discharged and will return to the campaign trail on Saturday, the outlet reported.
“Lt. Gov. Mark Robinson is currently being treated for burns following an incident at a campaign event in Mt. Airy. He is in good spirits,” Mike Lonergan, the Robinson campaign’s communications director, said in a statement.
The details surrounding the incident are not immediately clear. The Washington Examiner contacted the Robinson campaign for comment.
Robinson has been the subject of intense scrutiny after CNN reported last week that the lieutenant governor had posted antisemitic and racist comments on a pornographic website over a decade ago. Robinson has denied the allegations and has refused to drop out of the North Carolina governor’s race against Democratic candidate, Attorney General Josh Stein.
Since the release of the report, several of Robinson’s top staffers have resigned from his campaign team and the lieutenant governor has received criticism from both sides of the aisle.
