Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) underscored how the recent cuts to the federal government are needed so it can address the national debt of the United States.

The Oklahoma senator explained that residents of his state want proper elimination of waste and fraud within the government, and that a “reset” is needed to address funding that has been “abused” by universities. He added that the majority of voters don’t want their tax dollars to be wasted, which he argued has been going on for some time now, pointing to the U.S. Agency of International Development as an example.

“I don’t want anybody to lose their job, that’s the last thing we want,” Mullin explained on NBC’s Meet the Press. “But [at] the same time, any time you’re trying to secure this country, which a national security risk we have right now is our national debt, we have to make changes and we have to make it quickly. Unfortunately, when we have bureaucrats and politicians that have wastefully spent the American taxpayer dollars — and we don’t have to look any further than USAID to see the wasteful billions of dollars that were spent — cuts had to take place and every business owner understands this. Every business owner understands that you have to get your house in order before you can advance.”

Mullin contended that the government needed “an unbiased look” to make necessary changes, and that is why the Department of Government Efficiency and its head, Elon Musk, were needed for this job.

When asked about the national debt and how firing federal workers addresses this issue, Mullin reiterated that the government is focused on smaller issues before addressing larger ones. He added that over $55 billion in government waste has already been identified in just the first four weeks of President Donald Trump’s second term, and more will be identified going forward.

“Take care of your pennies, and the dollars will take care of themselves,” Mullin argued. “Every business owner knows that.”

Mullin also addressed how Trump recently joked about seeking a third term in office, even though it is unconstitutional. The senator stressed that the president is “a very interesting guy,” but that Trump’s comment was merely a joke and should be treated as one.
